FCPX and firewire leads and USB 3

I have seen on eBay leads which connect a small 4 pin firewire connector to a standard size USB connector. Now The big question will FCPX accept firewire over a USB3 connection.
Certainly the speed of USB3 is adequate and there must be a wiring convention for the connector.

has anybody done this.

This is kind of a moot question. If OSX can see the connected drive/media through the connector, then yes. If OSX cannot mount the media/drive, then definitely not. To help clarify, I've used adapters such as a ESATA->USB3, Thunderbolt->Firewire, and others with success. Your failure point is the connector working as advertised.

Thanks Reverend, after a little internet trawling - USB is specified at 5v and Firewire can hit 33v, I dont think I'll be connecting a firewire port to my USB3 connector anytime soon.

Are you trying to connect a drive or a camcorder? And onto what sort of Mac? If it doesn't have Firewire I'd guess it has Thunderbolt- so use a Thunderbolt to Firewire 800 adapter and then a Firewire 400 to 800 connector.

I'm trying to connect a camcorder to a Macbook pro with thunderbolt and USB 3, I just spotted these leads on eBay the leads obviously being completely passive i wondered about the interface.
I'll look into the thunderbolt to firewire interface.

Your camcorder has a firewire connection from it?
Just get a Thunderbolt to Firewire then... however, i just had a look at my wife's Macbook Pro to verify...she has a FW800 port.
So you have all the connections you need already on your macbook pro. You may need a cheap FW800 to 400... but thats like $3.
And if you have the Retina model, then you will need to buy a Thunderbolt to FW adaptor. (As the Retina models dont have a FW port.)

Thanks all, I was after a means of connecting one of my oldish but goodish firewire camcorders to my Retina Macbook pro, as stated above with no Firewire. The original leads i found on eBay were intriguing 4 pin firewire to USB but its a non starter (I wonder what they are used for).
Anyhow a 4 pin firewire to Firewire 800 lead exits for only a few $$$, so I'll but hte thunderbolt to Firewire 800 adaptor and I'm set.

I have that thunderbolt->Firewire800 adapter. It works great provided that your device doesn't use the Firewire for power. With your camcorder being power via AC or battery you should be set!
