fcp7+stills ="error out of memory"- on i7 imac/12gb/w/1024mb graphics card? - no way!

i am working on an 27" i7 imac/2.93 w/12gb ram/1024mb ATI Radeon HD 5750 graphics card

i'm using fcp7

in fcp, under system setting, memory/cache-my still cache is set to 100%

i'm cutting an opening.

i have 150 still images.

some the client provided.

some i shot.

some of the images are large-5mb

i opened a pro res lt 1920x1080/24p timeline.

i dropped all the images onto the time line.

each still image dropped in at 10sec.

i then changed all the images to 12fps.

i rendered and all went well.

i went to order the images.

i rendered and i suddenly got an "error: out of memory"!

how is that possible?

if the stills are too large, how small do i need to go?

and this opening will be projected on a 40' screen at a hotel in may.

i made a very similar opening on last years project that had 180+ images and cut on a 2010 17" mbp and never had an issue.

very frustrating.

what am i not doing right?

any and all thoughts appreciated.

be well.

If you have CYMK stills in there, it's likely what's causing your problems. Also avoid indexed or grayscale images.

The other thing is the size of your files.

If you are not moving around your images, keep your pixel aspect ratio the same as your sequence settings, and stay away from high dpi.

Keep it at 72.

FCP 7 has a functional image size limit of 4000x4000 pixels.

Images larger than those dimensions (in either axis) often causes problems.

Finally, make certain you have at least 20% of free space remaining on your drives. Files are swapped, and at least that much free space is required.

But make certain no CYMK stills are in the sequence.

Rob,

This thread title rang a bell so I Googled my username, DVXuser and "out of memory" and up came the thread where I posted the same problem some time back (has nothing to do with the stills themselves). Has everything to do with the number of project tabs you have open and the number of stills , videos, or other files within those tabs. Treat those as your "memory", not to be too full, and you should be fine - just get rid of some excess files. Maybe split up your 150 files to two or three different tabs. This is one of the reasons I'm now transitioning to Premiere. Let me know if this works!

These are just a couple of the limitations of working with FCP 7. These issues are gone when using 64 bit apps like FCP X or Premiere Pro. It's too bad that apple won't sell off FCP 7 and let someone else revamp it as a 64 bit app.
