Apple has just released FCP X 10.2.2 which among other features now supports XAVC-L files natively.

I don't know about the FS7, but for the Sony X70 clips it actually already supported XAVC-L in HD - this extended that support to 4K.

I believe it's the same for the FS7. HD support was introduced in 10.2. This release extends native support to 4k. Sweet.
Will try it out this weekend.

Does anyone use XAVC-L? If so, why? What results are you getting in terms of increased/decreased resolution, increased/decreased file size, and how much of a PITA are the files to edit with?

Hey Liam - I have not. Only mpg422 and XAVC-I thus far, to very good results. So never felt it even necessary to try...
But now with this 4k support... it opens up possible opportunities to save disc space on certain 4k shoots (thinking interviews, mostly static type footage)... especially if end product is HD.
I'll be doing some testing hopefully soon...

I do use XAVC-L regularly for all event shooting. I've done both HD and 4K. One thing I can say without a doubt the down converted 4K footage looked sharper and cleaner than the HD stuff I've shot. Shooting 4K I've used 4 and a half 64GB cards and 2 and a quarter 64GB cards in HD. Using that I can switch between 24P and S&Q easily than my previous selections of codec (mpeg422/xavc-i for S&Q). Been very very happy with the quality and the look I get from it. 10-bit HD with a lot of play with color when needed. For short films, corporate shoots and important things I use Intra only both in HD and 4K.

I still can't import XAVC-S into Compressor for transcoding.
Anybody knows why Apple is limiting Compressor this way?

Does FCPX edit XAVC-S okay? If so there's always a chance it's a bug in Compressor so I'd report it. There wouldn't be any logical reason for Apple to limit Compressor as codec support should be the same across the suite of applications.
