FCP Won't load....

I currently travelling around northern India with my HVX200, a 17"Powerbook and a Lacie d2 600Gb "Media Drive" to dump all the footage onto.

Yesterday I launched FCP to edit some footage I'd just shot and the splash screen came up and all the word etc flashed past then the splash screen disappeared but FCP didn't boot. I tried again... same problem.

I switched users and tried again... it asked me to set the scratchdisk and all booted fine! Going back into my primary account I got the original problem i.e. splashscreen but no FCP.

Anyone any ideas how I can remedy this? I've tried (I think!) to delete FCP's preferences but to no avail.... could anyone confirm how this is done just to make sure I did it properly!
Cheers

Did you manually delete FCP preferences? Use FCP Rescue 5 (I have it if you need it, let me know) to delete your preferences. Also run disk utility, and Disk Warrior if you have it.

It really does sound like a preferences curruption deal. There's probably a file you're not traching. But, I'm not totally sure about this.

I was just about to post for the same problem.

I've searched the web and can't get anything to work, even the above mentioned fixes.

Does FCP Rescue help with deleting all the un-needed preferences.

The following is the only FCP list i have in my preferences. Should this one be deleted as well?

com.apple.RegFinalCutStudio.plist

thanks,

Jason

OK, I just went ahead and trashed this file from preferences

com.apple.RegFinalCutStudio.plist

FCP now opens up. I'm not sure what I've done and it's too soon to tell if I messed anything up, but at least it's opening now.

There are several files you need to trash. That's why FCP Resuce 5 is so nice, it trashes everything. Only back-up when FCP is running fine. But only trashing the plist file won't do you any good. There are a series of files that need to be trashed.

Get a copy here-

Funny, I had this problem the other day and called Apple about it. They had me trash the preferences. It fixed everything.

"Delete the User Preferences

You can resolve many issues by restoring Final Cut Pro back to its original settings. This will not impact your project files, but you should verify your Scratch Disk location setting after doing this. To reset your Final Cut Pro user preference settings to their original state, do the following:

In the Finder, go to ~/Library/Preferences—the tilde (~) represents your Home folder.
Remove the "com.apple.finalcutpro.plist" file from the Preferences folder.
Remove the "Final Cut Pro User Data" folder from the Preferences folder."

Keep in mind that versions 4 and 5 of FCP store preferences differently. That's why there's FCP Rescue 4 and FCP Rescue 5.

Also, with FCP Rescue, or FCP Preferences Attic, you can back up your prefs when FCP is running well. Then when things act up, you can trash and restore a good copy. Why? Cause some of us use a lot of customizing of the windows, buttons, keyboard short cuts, filter and motion favorites, customized transitions/filters in the Favorites, etc. And trashing prefs, you lose all that.

I'm running FCP 5.1.1. Thanks for the tip on FCP Rescue 5. I just did the backup. Hopefully, I won't need it, but if I do, it's waiting...

I don't have any of these files! I've even used Spotlight to highligh all FCP related files and the only 2 (relevent) ones I get are the "com.apple.regfinalcutpro.plist" which if deleted asks me to enter my registration serial code for FCP on launch!.

Really bummer as I need to use it ASAP as I've not been abe to get it working now for 3 days :(

I've tried to get FCP rescue but all the computers here are PC's and I can't find a way to transfer the file to my PowerBook!

Which version of FCP are you running? If, in fact, it is version 5, you should be able to find it at: home>library>preferences>com.apple.FinalCutPro.plist

(for whatever reason, as many times as I edit it, it still comes out as "pli st". It should read "plist".)
