FCP with Snow Leopard?

Just ordered my first Macbook Pro that's preloaded with Snow Leopard (version 10.6.4), but wanted to find out how compatible this OS is with the latest FCP version?
(I heard that some people experienced problems while trying to run the latest FCP versions with this OS, but can't confirm if this is true or not)

I would preferably will be looking to get the latest FCP version (have a bunch of XF300 footage that only seem to like latest software :-\ ).

Any idea if this OS will be fine or will I need to switch to Tiger OS? (sorry if its a noobie question as I'm completely new to Macs :)
(Macbook Pro specs are: 2gb ram, 2.16 duo core)

Thanks!

Well between OSX tiger 10.4 and OSX snow leopard 10.6, was "leopard 10.5"...so leopard would be the first downgrade.

But I haven't heard of many problems regarding compatiblity of snow leopard and fcp. We're running a mac pro with both OSX 10.6 and FCP7 with no issue. But that's not to say that you won't. We did however have to hold our other machine back for a while becuase of our KONA card's compatibility with snow leopard and fcp7, but it's all up to date now.

I'd say since it's a new computer and the most up to date software, it better work, and if it doesn't take it to apple and tell them to make it work or give you your money back.

Thanks for the info and the quick reply! :)

Unfortunately its a second hand 1st gen mac so cant bring it back to the shop :) Guess I'll just need wait till I have the mac to test how well it handles FCP.

Just read that snow leopard uses 1gb of ram to just run the OS... it sounds like Vista to me :-\

You really to need to upgrade the amount of RAM on that MacBookPro.

Running a modern OS and a professional editing application requires at least 4 GBs of RAM.

and RAM is very inexpensive.

yea realized this a bit too late... apparently on the mac I got you cant upgrade the ram as its 1st gen (needed mac for a project quick and couldn't afford a new one so had to compromise)

Would it be better to downgrade to a lower OS that doesnt use up as much ram?

can you search here

everymac.com

and link to the exact model you have...i'm not aware of any macs you can't upgrade ram on...just off the top of my head at least

Yes, yes Unix, the base system of OSX is very good about distributing ram. FCP can only use 2GB at max on any system. So 1GB to the OS, 2GB to FCP, that leaves 1GB JIC.

I have some heavy issues with FCP (7.0.3) after the upgrades from Tiger to Snow Leopard
and from FCP Studio 2 to FCP Studio 3. I work on a MacPro 2x3GHz Quad Core, 4 GB RAM. When I was on Tiger I've experienced zero problems with FCP 6, the system was solid as a rock (in almost ten years, working with all the different FCP versions, I've NEVER have major problems).
Now I'm having crashes every single day and I can't understand what's happening.
I've tried to format the HD reinstalling FCP Studio 3 from the beginning but the situation doesn't change.

How did you install Snow Leopard?

To minimize issues, you should not use migration assistant, archive and install or time machine.

And any install of FCS3 should start with a new install of Snow Leopard.

Thank you David for your reply. I've formatted the HD so I've reinstalled Snow Leopard first. Ad then I've followed the normal procedure (no time machine, or migration assistant involved).

It might be wise then to start your own thread.

In it include your sequence settings, what type of dedicated external media drive you are using, and what cam and codec as well.

We do need details.

And if you would provide what you are doing when the crashes occur.

Problem is he didn't by a core 2 duo, he bought a core duo 2.16 which can only be maxed at 2gbs of ram.

I took the laptop to a mac store today and they looked it up with its serial number... and apparently it can be upgraded to 4GB Ram... :S now I'm confused...

Not sure if you work with P2 footage and a Duel PCMCIA adapter or not but the adapter won't work with Snow Leopard. I don't think that drivers exist for it. That is the only issue that we have run into.
