FCP vs Premiere

I keep hearing from media students in college how great FCP is and I'm not saying that ts not. But is it that much better than Premiere? I heard you can edit faster in FCP on a Mac, would this be true statement?

Also I have noticed that all the videos on youtube that were exported using FCP are much better quality (i cant seem to upload my quicktime exported mov files to youtube so all I can compare is uploaded avi files from premiere/movie maker)

Well, that is in a way comparing apples to oranges. Premiere is meant to be used in conjunction with After Effects to the point of leaving out critical self sustaining/standing functionality. I've never read it, but it's like Adobe wanted to make damn sure folks bought AE, so they release an under-gunned PP in order to force AE purchases.

Besides, Vegas stomps them both.

I switched to FCP from Premiere 6.5 some years ago when I switched platforms. But really, I'm not sure "better" is a valid way to put it. It's a tool. Whatever tool does the job is the tool you use.

I find Premiere to be a little clunky compared to FCP.

I use Premiere 40hrs a week at work, and FCP at home, I would take FcP in a heartbeat if I could use it at work.

Also Premiere can be pretty unstable, especially when outputting .m2v files for DVD. Give the CPU something it doesn't like...and it'll crash Premiere. I've even had it crash while doing nothing but surfing the internet during renders. I basically have to hands off the computer to let it do its thing.

This is an ongoing and ever changing debate that kind of depends on what your trying to do, how long you've been editing, and your workflow.

We use both. Most of our first cuts are done in FCP but the majority of finishing is done with AE, Photoshop, Illustrator etc..

Because Apple doesn't currently support Blu-Ray and we are now developing a Blu-Ray workflow we have to rely on Encore so although I might prefer FCP I believe we will rely on it less in the future.

If I worked on one project at a time and didn't have to share so many assets with other artisans I'd just go with one bundle, probably FCS. But Adobe is so much better integrated in a way that enables you to easily and efficiently share elements. Actually for us the two things that I really like about FCS2 is Color and ProRes.

If the only features your comparing are between the two NLE's they are very similar, you probably can't go wrong with FCP but you can get more work done with Adobe CS3/4.

As far as stability, I think people who complain about Premiere have not used it in a long time. FCP crashes much more than Premiere although admittedly we have seven FCP work stations compared to four CS3 workstations.

you cant compare the two, premiere is best for PC and FCP is best for... nothing.

Just kidding. They both have their strengths and weaknesses, altho alot of people give premiere way too little credit and FCP WAY too much credit. Still, you could just be a man and go with Avid.

I knew someone would bring in Avid. Funny we haven't heard from the Sony Vegas crowd. A lot of people swear by Vegas. I haven't used Premiere in ten years but the person who taught me FCP basic had only used Premiere (before Pro). I don't know what it means but yeah. FCP is all I use now. My last use of Premiere was 4 or 5. And up until a few years ago when Pro came out there were die hard Premiere 6.5 fans who just felt Premiere was the best even though everyone was editing on FCP, Avid or Vegas. I guess it's really up to the user what they're comfortable with.

I you want to be a pro, the only 2 choices is either FCP or Avid, Premiere isn't a player...

Wow. Strong words. I see this is about to get hot.

Maybe you should have asked Studio vs CS????

Motion vs After Effects??? Come on.

I'd like someone to say... "If you want to be a pro, then MOTION, After Effects isn't a player..."

hahahaah

Want to burn a bluRay disc? Try it in DVDSP... try it in Encore!!

Photoshop?????

But yes, I do agree -- FCP, Avid, Prem, Scissors.... all just tools that will suck equally well in the hands of fools.

I agree. The idea that only if you have FCP are you a pro is foolish. A lot of people on this board are making their living with Adobe CS or Vegas... I have a hard time not considering them "Pro's" at what they do.
