FCP render problems and timeline freezing

I am trying to finish editing a wedding video. When I opened FCP this last time the project started freezing up temporarily when I try to click in the timeline. I recently had to render the whole project because FCP was not auto rendering when I imported the footage. I was able to export as a movie file but it also freezes up when trying to play with Quicktime and also when I imported to DVD Studio Pro. I have tried repairing permissions and deleting the plist as well as the preferences. The whole project is about an hour and a half long. I've never had these problems before with large projects. Any suggestions would be appreciated. I really need to get this wedding finished.

Specs: Macbook Pro OS X 10.5.8, 2.4 GHz Intel Core 2 Duo, 4 GB 667 MHz DDR@ SDRAM, 106.6GB available
FCP Academic 6.0.6 ( bad decision, no upgrades)
External Hard Drive, WD Passport 1TB 144.74 GB available

Also, when trying to open recent projects I am getting a warning that it is from an earlier version. Then I got a Media Performance Warning that the following media files are not optimized for FCP and that it is highly recommended that I either recapture the media or use the Media Manager to create new copies fo the files to improve their performance for multi-stream playback.

What are your sequence settings with what footage codec?

Have you trashed your FCP preferences and reset your scratch discs?

Not a fan of WD Passports or any consumer level media drive

What media drive do you recommend? I finally got it to work. Although, I'm not exactly sure how I did it. I can't repair the disc without using the installation disc so I think something else is going on with my computer. As soon as I get this wedding finished I plan to do some clean up work. Thanks for the reply!
