a buddy of mine shot skating 30p letterbox and uploaded into fcp and it turned all weird and shitty when he uploaded it. help?

I looked at your video...
This is interlacing.
2 possibilities -

1. - Find a way to make sure you are importing the video at 30 frames PROGRESSIVE.
2. - (If you are already sure you are capturing with the correct settings) Make sure to start the capture a second or more WITHIN the video you want to import. Not prior to it.
Sometimes a loss of sync timecode stuff will give this interlacing result even if you have selected the correct import settings.

In FCP you have to tell it to remove the pulldown. It's not automatic.

DPStewart... your advice applies to 24p, not 30p. Final cut pro capture doesn't distinguish 30p from 60i.

Are you sure the footage looks like this in FCP, and not just when encoded for the web?

If you're really capturing 30p, then it's most likely that, somewhere in your encoding process, the field order is getting reversed.

If it looks bad in FCP, try switching the field order ("dominance") there, in the sequence settings.

If it looks ok in fcp, but not in the web-encoded video, than look at the encoding chain between FCP and the final product... make sure the field order matches in all of them. Also, make sure that the final product for the web is encoded as progressive, not interlaced.

i've had this issue so many times and i feel your pain! thus, i try to never shoot 30p ;) but since you already have, my advice is this: FCP, as i've found doesn't interpret 30p nicely so what i do IMMEDIATELY after capture is to go into the browser and change the field dominance to "none" by control-clicking or right-clicking where it says "lower" under field dominance. keep in mind that you want to set your sequence settings(command zero) to "none" as well before you start dropping clips into the timeline. if the project is already edited, you may have to do replace edits with the newly interpreted progressive clips. hope this helps, and if someone has a better way, please share!
