FCP project missing in action

I have a feature in FCP and always do a save before closing. I shut down the Imac before christmas, booted back up today and FCP opened with no projects visible. Started looking through projects and found some older versions, but not the version I was working on before Christmas. Is there any way to revert the Mac or FCP back to that day? (I don't use time machine). Previously, this has only happened in a crash, not when I shut down normally.

Have you tried looking through your autosave vault, if you have autosave on? That may not get you back exactly where you were, but it may get you within a half-hour's work of it.

This begs the question, you are backing up RIGHT? Drives die, they die with no warning and at unexpected times. At the very least you should be backing up your project file to a pen drive or something. A friend who liked to have a lot of FW drives on all the time, booted FCP and had some glitch and it trashed the directories of seven FW drives. Two were salvaged with Disk Warrior the other five we got some things off of but all the video files lost their resource fork (or maybe header info - the raw video was there but was pretty much useless since all the info about codec and frame rate etc was lost. Apple's response was FCP doesn't like a lot of FW drives connected...???
Anyway some was backed up some wasn't and it took weeks of "restoring" to even have a good idea of the loss.
The more pertinent story may be the folks who shot a feature (P2 cards) and were finished with the final edit. Booted the next day to do the render and got that click, click, click of a dead drive. Sending it to a disk salvage place, no luck. They had to go back to their investors and try to raise money to reshoot. The only footage left from the original was a few clips the DP pulled to add to his reel.
