FCP problem -- clips being replaced/duplicated

Big problem. I keep getting the error message when loading up FCP7 that says "Some attributes are different ........ media start and end points...." Bottom line, my clips keep on being duplicated. For instance, in any given folder, clip 45 might be a man walking his dog down the sidewalk. Then, when I jump down to clip 82, it's the same exact clip!! What's worse, the previous clip 82 has vanished.

Is this caused by not naming my clips? Does everybody on this forum name each and every clip when importing? The only thing I can think of is that FCP sees more than one clip with the same number and gets confused, but I don't think this is always the case, as I have started creating new folders for my project each time I import to prevent the same numbers being in each batch (as I import and then delete the clips from the card to make space).

I apologize if I am being unclear. I am new to FCP and to editing in general. Has anybody had the same problem or knows what I'm doing wrong?

...

It happened again to me. I wonder if it's the computer.

I was just in the middle of editing when I realized that there was a clip in the timeline that I had not put there. Some sort of glitch had replaced the clip with one that had yet to be used from a bin. What's worse is the fact that the source file had been replaced as well! The old file is gone!

Obviously this really worries me, as I stand to lose quality work at any second. Does anybody have any insights, or is this just happening to me??

It sounds like at some point there was media that was made offline (by moving it to a different folder in your finder, for example) and then you re-connected it to the wrong clip. You should practice safe editing and label/organize your clips so this sort of thing doesn't happen.

I'd suggest you look at your media files in the finder, and make sure it's all there, then, go into FCP's browser and see if stuff matches up. If it doesn't do a "reconnect Media" and select the right clip to connect it to.

Don't give clips the same name. I do in fact name EVERY clip, but usually something like "Science Center podium dolly1", "J_Smith_CU4", it really depends on the project how detailed I label clips, but the idea is to make them something that tells me about the clip without actually looking at it.
