FCP Import TROUBLES from EXTERNAL HDD

Okay...

Here we go...

MAC BASED WORKFLOW:
(MacBookPro 2.0 GHz, 2GB RAM, FCP 5.1.1)

Footage shot with HVX (720pn24) on two 8GB. Cards offloaded to the P2 Store. P2 Store transferred to LaCie 80GB External HardDrive. (USB 2.0, formatted for MacOSX-Journaled prior)

I open FCP. File>Import>Panasonic P2. I select Folder on the HDD where Contents folder and LASTCLIP.TXT files are located. OKAY. All files are seen in the Import Loader window.

TROUBLE: Whether I select a specific clip or Import All, I get this message of death:

**One or more clips failed to import; probable incomplete or corrupted files**

Out of curiosity, I tried dragging the Contents Folder and LASTCLIP.TXT from the external to my desktop. NOW THEY IMPORT!!! These same "corrupted" files can now be imported... As long as they're on my laptop...

PROBLEM: I don't have the room on my laptop INTERNAL HD to facilitate any big editing job.

I want to be able to import the clips from the EXTERNAL, save the new QT encoded files on the EXTERNAL and EDIT the files in FCP from the EXTERNAL.

WHY CAN'T I!?!?!?!?!?!?!? This has never been an issue before. Is it the make or model of the external? Is it the USB 2.0? Is it not formatted properly?

Please!!!! NEED EXPERT SOLUTIONS!!!

Also, I AM able to import directly from the P2 Store into FCP. This is fine, I can save both the Contents folder as backup, as well as the newly created .MOV files on the External...

I may have solved my own problem with a work-around...

But there will come a time when the files on the P2 Store will be formatted... I would like access to the files from the EXTERNAL...

What am I missing??

Had same problem for days. Did a Clean Install of OSX 10.4.6 and FCP 5.0.4. Problem solved. Dont ask me why... but it was my last ditch effort and it worked!!!

For those of you who experienced these issues, I wonder whether you upgraded your OS using Software Update or by downloading the Combo updaters? I find it preferable to download the combo updaters whenever Apple issues a software update. This makes certain that every file that needs to be replaced is indeed replaced.
