FCP- Excel and Timecode Format

Im editing a doc on FCP HD, meanwhile making tape logs using MS excel and wanted to know what is the standard method of cell format for timecode. While doing a websearch, some people using Excel under “Format” use the “custom” heading with “h:mm:ss” as the timecode format. I used that as well as the “37:30:55” format under the “time” heading, but the problem is the timecode when clicked always seems to convert to real clock time. For example 0:04:28 which is basically 0 hours, 4 minutes, 28 seconds, when clicked on shows 12:04:28 AM. This is not only annoying, but what I’m worried about is if I try importing this as a batch list into Final Cut, all that data will confuse the system. When I tried exporting my batch list from Final Cut, I noticed it automatically makes the Timecode column in the “general” format, which is what I plan to use. Is that a wise choice, or does anyone know a workaround for the Excel timecode with real time conflict?

Thanks,
Alexander

Re: FCP- Excel and Timecode Format

Hi hanguolaohu,

I have never tried creating a log using excell, but I have used appleworks and it worked just fine. I think you have to save as text, I don´t quite remember, but it is something like that.
In the time code you have to enter the frames as well.

I believe the procedure with excell, should be the same.

Check the manual, it says how you should create the spreadsheet.

Hope this helped

Fidel.

Re: FCP- Excel and Timecode Format

HH;MM;SS;FF works for me. I use a template put together by Larry Jordan that he at one time was offering on some website. If you can't find it, let me know and I'll send you a copy.

Re: FCP- Excel and Timecode Format

Following Steve Martin's advice on his FCP: Advanced Techniques DVD, I found the best way is to format the columns to logging view, arrange the way you want, export it as batch list. Then import the batch list into excel, and save as text file (tab delimited). This way there's no formatting problems or reimport problems when going back to FCP. Thanks for all the help!

I've seen this tutorial. I think Steve Martin's method is the safest one I've found. Thanks.
