FCP Edit - Issues within FCP

I confess I do not use FCP a whole lot but for my current project I have little choice.
Any help will be welcomed. These may be minor issues to you all, but to me they are a show stopper. I would appreciate any guidance u can provide

I have two issues:

1 - I'm unable to drag clips directly from viewer into timeline after I set my
in and out points. I used to be able to do this, but I no longer can do this.
What I do instead I have to copy the clip and then paste it to the timeline.
However this can become time consuming if u have a lot of clips like I do

2 - When I delet a clip from video time-libne automatically all other clips
that come after it move. To demonstrate

Timeline -- CLIP-1 Clip-2 Clip-3

If I were to delete CLIP-2 this happens (Clips-3 basically moves to the left )

Timeline -- CLIP-1 Clip-3

This screws everything I have done on the time line..

1- Just use insert and overwrite. The yellow and red envelopes. Insert creates a space for the clip where your scrubber is, and overwrite just lays over what is in the way of the clip.

2- This can be both irritating and helpful. The way I get around it is to drag the clip to an empty video track or the end of the timeline, then delete it.

For your first problem, try dragging the clip from the viewer to the canvas, you should then several different options (insert, overwrite, replace, etc). You just need to keep your playhead at the right spot for the edit. No idea why you can't drag into the timeline - I have never had that problem before. Are the tracks locked or something?

For your second problem, select the clip you want to delete, and hit APPLE+x. Your other clips won't move. You will have copied that unwanted clip to the clipboard though, so don't use the paste command (APPLE+v). Otherwise this is good workaround if you are on a keyboard that has only the backspace-delete key, and not a dedicated delete key in the bottom right (like a MacBook Pro).

Just a couple o' guesses here.

For the first problem, in the timeline control panel, make sure you have the 'v1' source patched into the 'v1' destination track. Also, why not just use an overwrite/insert edit. To do that the quick way, move the timeline playhead to the end of the clip (i.e. the last frame) you want preceding the edit. Then set the in and out points of the clip you want to edit in the viewer. Finally, press f9 for an insert or f10 for an overwrite. Remember, that an insert moves all following clips down the timeline to make room for itself, an overwrite doesn't.

For the second problem, if you don't want a 'ripple' delete (i.e. as per your example, deleting clip 2 bumps clip 3 to take clip 2's former place), just hit the 'baskspace' key. It'll leave the empty space the deleted clip forms. If you want the ripple, hit the 'delete' key instead.

I've only ever used FCP v5 and v6, so I hope this helps. And since I'm still working through my first cuppa joe, forgive me if none of this makes any sense! - J.

Thank u all !!!!! Really appreciate all ur suggestions

The version: I'm using FCP 5 and have a OS-X with all the latest upgrades
I have a Dual G4 --

I'm not near my MAC but will try all suggestions.. later today.
I never had these issues when I was running 4.5 version .. I upgraded to 5.0 and started having these issues. I unistalled and re-instaleld everything several times - still the same

I've been cutting in FCP for 4 or 5 years and I never knew that. Wild.
