FCP crashes - file too long?

Hi guys,

I shot an interview with my AF100 (1080p/24p) and I ended having one huge file (it's almost 2 hours of footage!!).
Now I'm having problems to digitize the file using Final Cut Pro 7.0.3 since it always crashes during the process.
I guess the file is too big.
Any input?
Thanks a lot!

You dont need to "digitise" the file. It already is "digital".

What are you doing to the file ( ingest workflow) in FCP?

Are you using Log & Transfer to bring the footage in? It could be that your Scratch and Render area is
running out of disk space .. however, that usually doesn't crash FCP.

Yeah, you're right. The right term is "to ingest".
I'm a non native English spoken person and sometimes I make this mistakes.
I'm using Log and Transfer in FCP.
I could ingest :) all the files but the longest one.
Thanks!

YeahJeff, I'm using Log and Transfer and I have plenty of space in my hard drive.
Thanks!

OK .. to be honest, I have not done a log-and-transfer on such a large AVCHD clip. Perhaps the suggestion to use
ClipWrap is the best approach.

The only thing I can think of is that perhaps you're exceeding the 32bit process size limit.

When it crashes, what does the crash log say? That may help figure out why it's crashing.

have you tried all the basics? repair permissions, trash prefs etc?

Have you tried to log and transfer part of the clip? That is, choose an in and out point in log and transfer then put it in the queue. But just try a few minute clip.

Are you doing this from the SD card or from a saved copy on a hard drive?

I had a long clip a couple of weeks ago with the same issue. Didnt find any "fix" for it. Trashed prefs etc etc etc Had to cut the clip into 3 sections and just L&T that way.

Were you doing this from the sd card or a harddrive?

It's my understanding that the Sd cards are fat32 so there is a 4gb file size limit. If you are rolling continuously a new file is created as 4gb is reached and these clips are spanned. I'm guessing that in your case and the OPs' case that the spanning info is gone, I've had this happen if I've made a backup copy to a hard drive formatted as fat32 and I Logged and Transferred from that drive.

Not really. I need to learn how to do all these procedures.
I ended solving the problem using (buying $50) the software Clip Wrap and worked pretty well.

I suffered the same issue - have an ongoing thread on the Apple FCP Forums. My solution ended up being to use Premiere for ingest. FCP for edit.

My clips were 1 hour+ each. FCP crashed with every one of them. Reliably.

I too had this same issue and opened a thread on Apple Discussions. Nothing. Same specs- hour long clip transferred to 2010 Mac Pro (8-Core) with FCP 7.03. FCP crashed every single time. Used in and out points but it didn't make a difference.

I attempted to transfer from both the SD card and the copy of the SD card on my external RAID. And I had plenty of disk space, trashed preferences, etc.

I have no idea why this occurs- especially since I was successfully able to transfer the clip using the same FCP 7.03 on my new 2011 17" Macbook Pro. Dunno why the more powerful desktop couldn't handle it, but I guess I'll have to do it this way or buy ClipWrap...

I've just opened up FCP for the first time and I'm in easy setup. Unfortunately, I only have FCP 6. I've edited HPX170 footage before and finding the codec was a breeze, it's listed. But there's nothing for the AF100. I know we're supposed to ingest in ProRes 422 but what do I put in easy set up? There's nothing! Or do I just ignore that and let FCP select for me? Any responses are appreciated!

same here. Any time my clips are long enough to force spanning, FCP crashes on ingest. Hoping the new FCP version in June with native editing will solve this.
