FCP Crash, now all hell broke loose.

Long story short...

I recently switched to a MPB/FCP workflow for my AVCHD HMC150 footage...

It has been a nightmare. Mac crashes just as much as any PC.

While rendering my LAST EDIT of my project (50hrs of work)... I get the hardware crash you must hold the power button down! So After reboot, my brand new FW800 drive will no longer read in the MPB. It does not pop up on the desktop and no where in the finder. Any suggestions? (the hard drive works on my PC thank god).

And if thats not enough, FCP will not load now. When clicking on it it says there is a unexpected error and I get no where...

I just updated everything a few weeks ago and exported fine a few times...

What Gives? IMO Macs are just as unreliable as a PC... Any help very much appreciated...

It would be helpful to detail which Mac, RAM, OS, FCP versions, etc.

Can't diagnose without knowing your set up

a few questions & comments...

is the MBP working for everything else besides FCP?

how "full" was the external firewire 800?

you said you were rendering...is your data drive your scratch disk also? again...how full is this drive?

did you "repair permissions" on the MBP & external drive?

Disc Warrior is pretty effective at resurrecting HD's.

have you tried mounting your firewire 800 drive on another Mac?

the obvious but dreaded...did you try re-installing FCP?

please tell us that you that you had an ongoing ***BACKUP*** and you didnt have this lengthly project on one drive only. if not find a way to back up that FW 800 drive!!!

as David S. say...more details would be helpful.

Oh yeah...

This is a Dual 2.4gh MBP, 4gb memory, snow leopard, latest mac os updates, latest fcp 6.x something.

Hard drive is a WD passport 500gb FW 800 for mac. Was at about 300gb of 500...

I am SUPER lucky that this reads in a PC... I am transferring all the data over to a different drive...

After more searching... I opend the DISK Inspector... see the external drive, tried to mount, wont let me... tried to fix a bunch of times, still wont mount...

Oh man, all that work. I am sincerely hoping that you are able to resolve this. In the future, how will you establish backups? on that much footage? What do you save the project steps only in FCP or will you backup the raw footage and all after each session? Hope it all works out for ya.

A couple of points here:

1. WD Passport drives, to me at least, are consumer based. Stay with a solid drive from G Tech, Wiebetech or Caldigit

2. If a PC can read that drive on its own, it wasn't formatted MacOS extended, and that easily could have caused the kernel panic.

It is formatted MAC OS extended (journaled), it has a mac picture on the packaging.

I am about to format another hard drive to transfer... what should I format it as?? Regular Mac OS Extended, or journaled?

Tried, get the error the drive cannot be mounted... tried to FIX the drive... I get a green txt saying it should be ok, try to mount again - wont mount...

Formatting another drive then going to do the restore thingy...

So the restore hard drive to another would not work in the Disk Utility, only works on mounted drives.

Interesting thing though... Vista can read and write MAC OS extended? I am transferring from 1 mac os to another mac os drive... thank god!

UPDATE FOR FCP:

I reported the error a bunch of times... checked updates and there was one for mac os and itunes... i updated and NOW FCP LOADS! sheewww

This is the 2nd time a mac update fixed a major problem...

Now to wait 5 hours for the new HD to be loaded with the project............

I just updated everything a few weeks ago...

IMO, it was probably unwise to do this right before working on a major(?) project. Especially if it involved upgrading your OS to one that is only ~3 mos. old.

Glad it all worked out in the end though.

after 5 hours... transferred all new brand new harddrive... plugged it in the mac... and all my data is there!!!

So tried to open the FCP project and it wouldn't work... Got an error - wrong type

Read up and this fixed it, hope this helps anyone that is going through the same ordeal!

Had a similar issue with my Final Cut projects. May have something to do with users/permissions (I had to do a clean install of my entire system and re-installed Final Cut.) Not sure if that has anything to do with it.

Found a site that made the following recommendations that worked for me:
1) Control click on your FCP project file (right click) and select "Open With"
2) Open with TextEdit
3) Select "File/Save As..."
4) Save as another file name with the .txt extension
5) Find your newly created file and change extension to .fcp (may need to go to Finder/Preferences/Advanced tab and select "Show All Extensions" to get file extensions to appear)
6) Open and edit at will!

Yeah, I didn't know its bad to update... so far updates have fixed most of the bugs i ran into... I had no (serious) issues with the last 2 projects... and this latest project I was working on the 8th export...

You know thinking back... I had my MBOX plugged in... (Protools not running though)... I hardly thing that is the cause though.

SO THE 8th EXPORT IS COMPLETE! thanks for the help guys...

(now to ponder better ways to back up 300+GB projects....)

SO!

It happened AGAIN! Different hard drive, different project...

I am editing along and... All of a sudden FCP hangs up for a few minutes (beach ball)... when it comes back my whole project is corrupt, no picture and audio was shreeking on all my footage. WTF

So I tried looking at the HD, it shows up but nothing could be opened. I removed it plugged it back in - nothing. Corrupted... tried in the PC to recover - nothing. Corrupted...

@#$%@#$

I think I may edit on PC for a while.................
