FCP Capture Issues/Frame Rate Discrepancies

I just bought an HVX200A. I previously did a little editing in iMovie, but now I’m learning FCP. In preparing for my first capture into Final Cut (I’ve been working on the files that came with the Apple Training book), I shot (on DV) a clip of me explaining what I was doing, stopped the recording, then started it again and made a clip of me playing guitar. I took the camera outside and recorded a shot of me running behind the garage. This was all at 480i/24p. Then I changed Recording Setup to 480i/30p and shot some tape of me jumping out from behind the garage pretending I was shooting a gun. My thoughts were that this would be slowed down a little.

Then I put the tape into a little Canon that I’m using for a deck, rewound it, turned off the camera, plugged in a Firewire, turned on the camera and started up FCP. I was able to control everything through the Log and Capture and, following the book, tried setting markers. That’s when my world pretty much collapsed. I tried a Clip capture and a Batch capture, and in both instances I got “Batch Capture: Timecode Error: Unable to locate the specified timecod. You may have specified a timecode with insufficient room for a pre/post roll operation.” I’m assuming that during the Clip attempts it read, “Clip Capture:,” but the timecode message was the same.

I just can’t figure it out. I was able to use the “Now” capture option and got everything I filmed into FCP as one clip, then created sub clips from every individual scene. The problem there is that everything has a vid rate of 29.97, when I know that most of that should have been shot at 24p. During setup (I used Easy Setup because that’s what the book showed me) I set the Format to DV/Panasonic DVCPRO, the rate to 23.98 and used DV-NTSC. Anyway, I’m getting kind of discouraged, so any suggestions would be most welcome. I mean, if I can’t get this stuff into FCP the right way from a simple tape, what am I going to do when I save enough to buy a P2 card?
