FCP and external monitor

Re: FCP and external monitor

Probably not (although everyone has their opinions on favorite / most hated decks, this one rarely gets good reviews).

The basic low cost JVC VTR.

The basic low cost Panasonic.

The basic low cost Sony (can play DV, although it is a DVCAM VTR).

For someone who wants a cool deck with no account for expense.

The best DV capable deck under 10 grand which is outside of most people shooting with a DVX100's price range, but which if you won a small lottery prize would be real cool to have.

The concensus seems to be that the Canopus is the best of the inexpensive firewire models...

Re: FCP and external monitor

So a VTR/deck is required to get preview on a monitor/tv? You can't do it any other way?

To get a proper preview, either it or a good DV >> NTSC converter box. You can go with a canopus or its lot, which are much easier on the wallet, but they often are not the highest quality conversions. I would always prefer the VTR, but if pressed, a canpus and a stereo receiver would work.

Re: FCP and external monitor

Thanks for the advice. My partner and I just got 2 dual 2ghz G5's with 2gb ram, FCPHD and DVD3. Any add-ons you would recommend to that setup aside from the vtr-prod monitor?

-Photoshop (a life saver)
-A stereo receiver and two speakers (properly placed they can really help audio editing, no need for fancy pro stuff, you can get some infiniti speakers and a Yamaha receiver and be a-ok)
-FireWire hard drives (use these like you used to use disk drives, merely as archives, work off the internals)
-A gigabit switch between your machines.
-A VTR and monitor. The monitor could be a flat panel at this stange.
-An anthro cart and a Marathon Computer under-desk mount for the G-5
-A comfy chair.
