FCP and a Spanned-clip-that's-not-really-a-spanned-clip Issue

First time in three years I've run into a problem ingesting P2 into FCP...

I copied the contents of the card to my RAID. There is one clip that won't ingest. In the L&T window it says that it's a Spanned clip. But, it is not spanned from one card to another. It is the 11th clip on the card of 14 total clips. The 14th clip IS spanned, and it was ingested with no problem.

I get a little red stop sign icon after the clip errors out in the L&T window. I put my mouse over it and it reads "Error: Unknown."

I do not have the data on an actually P2 Card...it only exists on my RAID HDDs.

Now, I CAN play the clip in the L&T window...no problem! It plays all the way through and I can't see any issues...just that it won't ingest.

The clip is 10:58;16, and the MXF is 3.98GB. Running FCP 6.0.6 on a Mac Pro QC 2.66, 4GB RAM, OS 10.5.8. See pic below...

Hmmmm...thought someone would know something.

Is there at least a way that I can dump the data back to the P2 card so that I can pull it off the camera via Sdi or component?

Yeah...tried that "Retry" trick and it did the same thing. Got 99% of the way through the clip, then the little red stop sign icon came up. Ugh.

I have 190+ GB free on that particular 500 GB RAID, so I don't see how that would cause me a low-disk space error?

Yet another case of log & transfer failing to import a clip properly, for no discernible reason. If Mac experts want to defent l&t, then please help Mike to get his clip imported.

Mike, just ditch log & transfer. Get Raylight or Calibrated's MXF Importer, or MXF4QT, any of them will import that clip just fine.

If you don't want to go that way, and you just need access to that one clip, then install P2CMS on your system. That adds an MXF import module to QuickTime, so you could then drag that one clip right to the timeline. You would have to manually drag the audio in (which is really the only drawback to the P2CMS MXF importer), but if it's just for one clip then it shouldn't be a big deal.

Might be a long shot, but in the Log and Transfer preferences, uncheck REMOVE PULLDOWN...see what that does.

Native MXF support is nice, but not necessary. All it does is COPY the footage from your P2 dump storage drive to your MEDIA drive, wrapping it in a QT file. This would take the EXACT SAME amount of time as it would to COPY the footage from your storage drive to the media drive, then import with the third party codecs. So I fail to see any time savings in this manner.

The ONLY reason I'd use third party MXF importers is if you have a lot of metadata on those files and you need access to that. Most people don't, so L&T works fine. But if you do, then MXF4Mac, P2 Flow or Calibrated are great. Raylight just puts the info on a one frame slate on the imported media, so not very searchable.

But sometimes log and transfer just plain doesn't work. Which is why I tell folks who are stuck that there are many other ways to get access to their footage.

What else can you do, when l&t just plain refuses to import a clip?

>"What else can you do, when l&t just plain refuses to import a clip?"

That is VERY true. I suggest RAYLIGHT or CALIBRATED as the cheaper options when you have a stubborn L&T. MXF4MAC when you want metadata...and now P2 Flow for the same reason, only also if you have multiple machines that need access, as it will import the metadata into various fields in FCP, and allow you to BATCH CAPTURE the files as QT, so that you don't need a license for the software on every machine.

Thanks...I already had it unchecked...so...

The FCP machine I'm editing on belongs to the school that I work for, so, when I asked for Calibrated yesterday, that means I could get it by Presidents Day at the earliest :)

ok, i had this same issue same time you did, 12-2009. All i did was move my IN point a few seconds further, instead of setting it at start of the clip. Set my OUT point and it worked great. Others have done the same and also worked great.

I have yet to try Calibrated. I will keep this in mind next time i encounter this. How much did it cost you and what are your thoughts on using it> You did use it, right?

barry also will tell you that this SPANNED message will appear each time on long clips...

I 100% agree with Barry. I'm a mac user and sometimes log and transfer just doesn't work. grumble.
