FCP 7 log and transfer issues with AVCHD ftg

I have posted a bit on this before but have never found any answers really. I am shooting 1080 24p footage on my af100 and using log and transfer to transcode to prores422. I have tried this on 4 different FCP suites we have at the office and the same thing happens. I am running FCP 7.0.3 and 10.6.8 on all of my edit systems.

Basically when we are shooting a lot of footage with the af100s we run into a problem with log and transfer.

I shoot each card, transfer to a folder on a drive drive and label the folder with date and card number, so every card has a separate name and reel number.

I realize that each card starts with a clip name of clip#1 and I also realize that FCP 7 renames the clips as they come in (for example clip #1 on the 3rd card I shoot may be renamed clip #571)

What's been happening with my systems is suddenly on the third or fourth card log and transfer starts REPLACING clips and media. For example log and transfer might be bringing in clip #504 but then when it finishes it's transfer suddenly clip #198 is offline and when I check my capture scratch folder a new #198 has been created and the old one has been erased. So the clip #504 in the log and transfer window becomes the new clip #198.

Obviously this is a problem as it is replacing media and I am losing clips...

This is crazy to me - has anyone else seen this??

Thanks in advance for any help!

I haven't experienced that exactly but I have a nagging problem in log & transfer. When I launch the L&T window and select a folder to ingest, FCP randomly loads up files from several different folders. But now, it is not recognizing the specific folder I request. As a workaround, I have to drag individual MTS files into the timeline from the desktop - very cumbersome. Should I trash preferences? Have no idea how to make Log and Transfer really work.

Trashing FCP preferences has long been the first line of defense in the "FCP is acting wonky" scenario.

That said, another key element to tapeless workflow with L&T is how you copy the media from the card. L&T often looks for a certain file structure from the camera's media card, and this is more than just the folder with the actual video files. There are other files on there that matter. If you aren't going to do L&T directly from the card, and would rather move the media to a drive first, the best thing to do is to make a disk image of that card. This preserves the file structure that FCP needs to see, and allows L&T to operate the way it should.

I used Clipwrap on my last projects with AVCHD cause my client didn't handle the cards properly and my log and transfer was seeing it even after I trashed preferences. Works like a charm

Give the incoming clips CUSTOM NAMES. That's an option in the L&T interface. Number them by card...so like CARD01_Clip001. Or by project...PROJECTNAME_Clip001...or however you want to do it. Change the naming settings for each card. FCP will remember what clip came from where if you ever needed to reimport. You can even name after you import to more descriptive names and FCP will remember what the original was. And you can have FCP rename the captured files to match the clip names after you change the names...and FCP will STILL remember where they come from. Just use the first CUSTOM NAME to avoid writing over the footage as you import.

This is a flaw with AVCHD...in how the cameras record the clip names. THis isn't an issue with P2 or XDCAM or Canon DSLR.
