I have an AVCHD offline/online workflow problem on a no-budget doc I'm editing on FCP7... Anyone know if I am just stuck here or is there a workaround?
Here's the deal...
I have 200 hrs of 1080 24p AVCHD footage to be transcoded for FCP and a maxed out hard drive budget, so...
...I want to edit in ProRes Proxy 720, with plans to online in ProRes HQ 1080 using the Batch Capture workflow to re-ingest the media from my final cut as HQ. The first issue is that when using Log and Transfer for AVCHD footage, FCP only allows you to bring it in at the same size as the source, so to get the 1080 source clips to my desired 720, I had thought to use Media Manager to recompress everything to 720 after I had brought it in through L&T.
The problem is that after doing this and linking my clips to the new media, the clips seem to lose their link back to the original AVCHD source media, meaning I am not able to use Batch Capture to re-ingest any of the clips as ProRes HQ for onlining. When I select Batch Capture for the recompressed, re-linked clips, FCP launches Log and Capture, not Log and Transfer as it should. Nor does it work when I open L&T and then drag the clips into queue. That also results in FCP trying to launch Log and Capture.
Does using the Recompress feature in Media Manager, or any other for that matter, always cut the link between the clips and their L&T source media, or am I maybe just doing it wrong? Is there some way to preserve or get back that metadata?
Any help on this would be much appreciated...
And also...
I know I should probably just buy more hard drive space, but I'm trying to figure out if I can get away without it...
I am also aware that an obvious solution would be to just skip the recompressing and edit in ProRes Proxy 1080 instead of ProRes Proxy 720, as the difference in file size is not that great. For my hard drive/space situation, however, it makes all the difference.
