So I have the last Power PC which is amazing and has served me well running FCP Studio, never had any problems with it. I need to upgrade to FCP 7 as people I work with have the newest version and I can't pass things back and forth easily anymore. Unfortunately FCP 7 requires a Intel Mac. I don't have the money to invest in another tower and I really like the one I have, it's like new still (Dual 2.3 GHz, 4.5 GB Ram) but I need to upgrade to run FCP 7.
I already have laptops and would rather have a solid machine at home just for video. I'd imagine I can sell this tower and get something for it (?) but I'd like to only pay out under $1,000 to upgrade. I'm told that the imac's are more powerful now, but there's something that just seems unprofessional about editing on an imac that you can't expand as much as a desktop, no? And I'm told that a 2.8 dual on a imac is actually slower than the same processor on a tower. So should I try and take a risk on a used, older intel mac tower or should I but a new smaller imac? I know only I can make this decision but I though tit would be helpful to hear thoughts from people who may have experience with either or this same dilemma. I'm really bummed I have to get rid of my faithful Power PC. Thanks.
