NEED HELP just finished episode one of my web series and need to put a rough cut together!!!

Help, does anyone have a clue how this is done?
What am I doing wrong??

I have experienced this problem with longer clips with LPCM audio. It seems to work fine with shorter clips but long ones cause FCP 6 to hang on log & transfer.

The only solution I've heard so far is to transcode in another application before import to FCP. Clipwrap can do that http://www.divergentmedia.com/clipwrap either by rewrapping the H.264 or by transcoding to Prores. It isn't free but it is cheaper than an upgrade to FCP7 (which I'm trying to avoid as I really like the look of FCPX which is coming in June).

Personally I've fixed this by importing into Premiere Pro CS5 and exporting as ProRes- sounds like a dumb thing to do, I know! But I am much more comfortable with the UI in FCP even though the performance of PP CS5 is undeniably better.

Hope that helps!

Cheers, Hywel

P.S. If you haven't already done so make sure you are on FCP 6.0.6 - I believe some earlier versions can't cope with AVCHD footage at all

I have FCP6.0.6, experienced the same problem. I use Clipwrap and it works great. Cost: $50. I would also suggest using an external 7200rpm FW drive for your media.

I had the same problem with FCP6. I believe it's the length of the clip. I had a clip that ran 30 minutes and it froze every time while converting. A friend with FCP 7 tried it, went through without a hitch. Either upgrade or find a computer with FCP 7.

May I suggest using an eSata drive if possible my old mac nips along surprisingly fast a FW drive is noticeably slower

Had this problem all week with FCP6 ( I have a 1hr 15 min AF clip on a 32GB card) , tried log and transfer with FCP7, crashed several times. Logged and transferred by cutting 10 min sections of my 1hr 15min clip in L&T viewer and dropping in.
Lesson 1. Don't shoot long boring interviews for a living.

Shoot long boring interviews all you want, just use the right tool for the job to import it. First thing to do is make sure you're using AC3 audio instead of LPCM, if you're using any version of FCP prior to 7.0.3.

Second, if L&T fails, blame L&T. You can use Cineform or ClipWrap or Toast or several other tools to transcode it, where L&T chokes.

Third, shortly, hopefully sooner rather than later, Panasonic will introduce an .MTS importer program which will forever rid you of the need to use L&T for AVCHD footage, and guarantee that any and every clip will always import.

So, go right ahead and shoot those long boring interviews, just be aware of where the problem actually lies and work around the L&T limitations.

I use FCP 6.0.6 and it works fine for me, it just takes a long time. It seams FCP 6 is sketchy for most people and I seem to be one of the few who can get it to work. My advice is to listen to Barry in the previous post.

L&T crashes (FCP 7.03) consistently for me with clips over about 5 minutes. It was stable up until about a month ago, so I think something Apple has done with a recent update is to blame. Premiere works fine since it reads files natively. Can't wait for native .mts in FCP.

I've also seen similar crashes when footage has been shot with Relay recording set to off and the record rolls into the end of the card. AVCCAM restorer handles this fine.
