FCP 4.1 Capture Presets/Sequence Presets Question.

I just got the DVX100a this week and the Panny anamorphic adapter.
Now I am capturing with FCP 4.1 and have questions about frame rate and what presets I should use in fcp. When I capture 24p and drag it to the timeline, it wants me to render the clip. Is this normal? Also when I get properties on the clip, the video is still 29.97.
Currently I am capturing 24p advanced in camera (which I have yet to discover what advanced means) with the DVX.

Here's my current FCP settings:

Sequence preset: DV NTSC 48 KHz - 23.98
Captur Preset: DV NTSC 48 Khz Anamorphic
Playback Output: Apple Firewire NTSC (720 x 480)

The anamorphic preset in fcp works perfect- FCP unsqueezes the image and adds bars top and bottom. Now all I need to figure out is how to set it to capture 24p without having to render it. I have a new powerbook G4 1.25 and it has playback problems with the rendered clip. Any ideas on what I may be doing wrong? Hope I made myself clear.

You're probably having to render because the sequence preset's frame size is set to DV NTSC standard (720x480), while your captured media is anamorphic. Thus, the area where the black bars are place need to be rendered.

I'm pretty sure there's a widescreen sequence preset.

Thanks for the info!
I have so many more questions about this capture process, but I will focus on just one major curiosity now:

When the DVX does a pulldown from 24pAdv to 29.97 in camera, is Final cut Pro really capturing a 29.97 fps stream? The clips I capture seem to already be in 29.97. Am I ever going to edit 24fps in the timeline, or just the look of 24p ???

Re: FCP 4.1 Capture Presets/Sequence Presets Quest

ok - this is to the best of my understanding.

the dvx100 outputs to 29.97, even in advanced pulldown mode. it is my belief that it applies a "standard" 3:2 pulldown when playing back 24p Advanced material on NTSC monitors...(it could be 2:3:3:2 but my editor and I are looking at the pattern and it appears to be 3:2 coming straight out of the camera) and/or if captured at 29.97 NTSC in FCP as any other regular NTSC DV footage.

* HOWEVER *

when this footage is brought in as 23.98 w/ Advanced Pulldown Removed (2:3:3:2), FCP4 creates a true 24p timeline (23.98). this is the magic, because it recreates a true 24p frames w/o recompression.

God knows - I'm in post hell now on a feature w/ my own issues trying to sort a few things out. The one _big_ advantage of shooting/editing 24pA regardless of your final output (NTSC let's say), is that you retain higher and more consistent resolution w/o recompression and artifacts.

If you shoot/edit 24pA, you will only face recompression in your final conversion and down res to NTSC (which isn't so much a down res as it is adding interlacing artifacts). Plus - you have the advantage and option of upres to 1080/hd, or to film at 24fps in sync.

correct me if I'm wrong.

-b.

Your capture preset needs to specify 23.98 also; you may have to create a new preset for both Anamorphic and 23.98 (I think I did, but can't remember)...

That is, make sure your capture preset is for 24P Advanced, or maybe it says 2:3:3:2...

Re: FCP 4.1 Capture Presets/Sequence Presets Quest

From what I remember, there's not a 23.98 and anamorphic combination in the pre-installed sets of capture presets, so what I had to do was copy one of the existing presets and edit it and save it.

Re: FCP 4.1 Capture Presets/Sequence Presets Quest

I'm a little confused now--at 23.98 fps, the Capture Preset Editor grays out the "Remove Advanced Pulldown (2:3:3:2) from DV-25 and DV-50 Sources" checkbox. It becomes available again when I select 29.97 fps.

If I capture at 23.98, is FCP still removing the Advanced Pulldown? What's the proper settings combo to get to a true 24p timeline? And why does my head hurt? ???

Re: FCP 4.1 Capture Presets/Sequence Presets Quest

In reply to Aureliano. I was confused about that also. It is none to clear and not explained anywhere in the FCP manual. I played around with the setting a little, capturing 24PA clips and seeing what happens. I found that if I set to 29.98 and check the remove pulldown box, it works and gives me 23.97 clips. Don't ask me to explain, I don't know what's going on. If anyone knows, please enlighten us.

BTW, sorry if I'm off by a hundredth or so on the frame rates. I can never remember the exact numbers.

Re: FCP 4.1 Capture Presets/Sequence Presets Quest

This was a digestible enough tutorial for me:

[link]http://www.webbedenvironments.com/fcp/downloads/Tutorial1-24fps.pdf[/link]

But it says the capture preset should be 29.97 with AP removal, and the sequence preset should be DVNTSC 48 kHz – 24.

There's that headache again. :-/
