FCP 30p Capture

I have previously tried to capture 30p footage (from a DVX100A) with Adobe Premiere Pro CS4 and had trouble getting the footage to deinterlace properly (such as for a true 29.97 fps progressive H.264 export). I will soon be shooting a video in 30p and Final Cut Pro will be used to capture the clips. Are there any specific settings needed for capturing 30p from a DVX with FCP?

Also, when I captured 24pa (2:3:3:2) video with Premiere Pro CS4 I found that I needed to start capturing the clip so that the first frame captured was the first one in the 2:3:3:2 set. Would capturing 24pa in FCP be easier than this?

I don't know too much about Premiere, but I am a FCP user, and whether you shoot 60o, 30p, or 24p regular, you can just capture at either normal DV-NTSC or DV-NTSC Anamorphic if you shot squeeze. 24pA footage you want to remove the 2:3:3:2 pulldown when capturing, so you'd adjust the capture preset accordingly.
I am not quite sure what you mean by de interlacing 30p footage... You would only have to de interlace 60i.

But isn't all footage from a DVX stored in 60i (just with a different pulldown method if needed)? How would FCP know that it contains sets of 2 fields that are meant to combine to make progressive frames (for 30p) instead of the usual separate fields (for 60i)? I once tried to export a true 30p video made from captured DVX 30p footage with Premiere and it resulted in the fields not being combined properly.

30p is a bear and I never shoot in it anymore. But since your going that route, I'll explain the best way I've found to capture and edit 30p in FCP.

First, just capture with the DV-NTSC Easy preset as you would for DV interlaced material, and IMMEDIATELY after you capture, goto your Browser window scroll to the right and right-click on one of your clips and change the field dominance to None. Repeat as necessary or shift-click all the clips and right click to set all to None. After you do this, hit command 0 to goto your sequence settings and set to None as well. For good measure I click the Advanced tab and make sure its set to progressive not interlaced.

(note) I've also strangely had luck sometimes with just capturing as DV-NTSC Easy and start editing. Go figure!

Hope this works for you,

You have to do all that to make sure your progress footage is not interlaced?

With 24 or 30p, I've always just captured and edited, no de-interlacing or changing the field dominance needed.

When I use premiere pro CS4 I find that it often doesn't work properly. For 24p footage I have to start the clip with the first field of a pulldown cycle for it to work and the one time I made a 30p project it didn't deinterlace properly.
