I have 16:9 footage that I took with a Sony EX-1. The footage was edited as 1080p footage at 23.98.

I need to export it as a 4:3 image without distorting the image. Basically i don't want it letterbox, i dont want it squished or distorted in any way. It is also important to have the final image be 4:3

Without using compressor or any other program, how can this be achieved? any help would be appreciated.

Are you talking about cropping it to 4:3? That's the only way to turn 16:9 into 4:3 without letterboxing or distorting.

Yep that's called panning and scanning. The image will be much wider than a 4:3 frame once you reduce the height to match. So you can either leave it centered or reposition on a shot by shot basis as is done with all movies for TV.

Within the same project that you are working in :
1. create a new sequence with settings to match your output. (ie 4:3)
2. select your desired output codec, height, width and pixel aspect ratio.
(eg DVCPRO-ntsc, 720x480, CCIR601 )
3. open the new sequence in your timeline
4. go to the project panel and drag you original sequence onto the timeline of your new sequence. This is called a nested sequence.
5. contol click on the nested sequence in your new timeline and select top option 'open in viewer'
6. go to the viewer window and click on motion tab. Adjust the scaling to suit using the canvas window as your reference.
7. Export as quicktime movie and you will be in the codec you selected for your new sequence.

Hope this helps.
