The Professor
I've been running a number of tests with FCE (Final Cut Express) and the different 720p frame rates. Currently I'm testing Toast 9 and VoltaicHD to convert the files to AIC (Apple Intermediate Codec) for editing. My version of FCE is 3.5.1; I'd upgrade to 4.x if it solves the problems I'm seeing....
720/24p:
FCE takes the 24p and lays it into a 30p time line. This seems to be a pattern of 3 frames and 1 frame copied twice in the time line. Outputting the time line as 24p does drop frames, but it's a hit or miss sort of thing. At times the extra frame is dropped and other times the extra frame is kept and a different frame is dropped.
720/30p:
This problem is well known in other threads, but the audio is normal and the 30p is played back at double speed into a 60p file. This is happening with both VoltacHD and Toast 9. At the 1/2 way point in the video, VoltacHD shows a white screen and Toast 9 shows the last frame. Pity the conversion is NOT working correctly, because this seems to be mode that FCE likes in 720p.
720/60p:
FCE seems to drop every other frame to convert the 60p video into a 30p time line. While this does work, it seems a shame the 1/2 the frames are thrown away.
I'm wondering if anyone who using FCE 4.x is seeing the same problems or not.
