FCE and Toast Titanium - My Problem

I've recently purchased a LaCie 8x DVD-R/DVD+R burner with Toast Titanium. I have yet to successfully burn a DVD. I've only burned a video CD, but the Super video CD failed and the DVDs have failed. I've tried exporting from Final Cut Express as a FCE movie file or as a Quicktime file. Neither has worked yet. Every time I try and fail, I'm out a couple of bucks.

I'm using a Blue & White G3 Tower converted to a G4 500 MHz.

I'm using Maxell DVD-R discs.

Any suggestions?

while toast claims to "author" the disc... you might look at using something as simple at idvd or even dvd studio pro to actually author a disc, and just burn the created dvd files to disc using toast vs. letting toast create the disc files. That way you can be sure whether it's your authoring/media or the burner setup that's faulty.

Re: FCE and Toast Titanium - My Problem

That may be true, but Toast should work. Besides, iDVD is designed so it will only work on an Apple Superdrive, not a third party drive. Would I be able to "author" in iDVD and "burn" in Toast? I have iDVD on the iLife DVD but never put it on my computer.

Re: FCE and Toast Titanium - My Problem

What do you mean by "fail"? Is the burn process failing (hanging or resulting in an error) or are the discs just unplayable?

Re: FCE and Toast Titanium - My Problem

I keep getting a message that the disk would not burn (I have not copied down the precise wording).

Re: FCE and Toast Titanium - My Problem

So you have a burning problem, not an authoring problem. I'd guess that the error is a "buffer underrun" - unless it's something like trying to use media that doesn't match the drive (i.e., using a dvd+r in a dvd-r drive).

As for buffer underruns... I use Toast 5, and on three identically set-up computers (well, as identically as possible), using the same external FW DVD-R drive, Toast ALMOST ALWAYS aborts with buffer underruns on two, and works perfectly, at 4X speed, on the other. The Drive is an OWC Mercury Pioneer A04. I've contacted OWC and Roxio, and looked at many discussion groups, to no avail.

The computer that works is the slowest of the bunch; and even burning at 1X on the other machines yields a failure rate of about 75%. I haven't been able to track down the cause further... but the drive works fine with toast (on at least one computer); the drive works fine with DVDSP 2 on at least one of the computers where Toast doesn't work; and Toast works fine on the other computers with their built-in dvd-r drives. Very tricky problem... perhaps yours is similar.

If you can, try another computer and / or other software...

ullanta,

Thanks for you response, although it's rather depressing. Certainly during the entire process of investigating this and purchasing, I assumed it was going to work "right out of the box."

Yes, the "underrun" concept sounds familiar and may have been part of the error message. I'll try again and copy down what it says.

As mentioned previously, I'm using a Blue & White G3 Tower converted to a G4 500 MHz. Not a speed demon by today's standards. How does that measure up to your "slow one?"

The only other computer I have is an iBook with a tiny 10GB hard drive.
