Resident Agitator
So I was watching Fellowship of the Ring earlier today, and reflecting on the how beautiful it is. Yet for all the amazing cinematography and visual effects, this simple shot is my favorite out of the entire trilogy.

What is your favorite shot out of all three films?

Definitely one of my favorite shots as well. Damn, there are so many! They really did a great job with the visuals.

I remember reading somewhere that the ring used in that shot was actually 6 inches in diameter. That's how they got the exaggerated perspective.

I'm pretty sure, anyways. Can anyone back this up?

One of my favorite is when Gandalf and crew come down the hill to save Helm's Deep hidden by the sun...

You are right about the increased size. I believe it is mentioned by Jackson in the comentaries. There are so many great images, trying to think of my favorite.

You can tell from its physics that it is larger and heavier. I remember enjoying that shot as well.

One of my favorite scenes is the slo-mo escape from the bridge of Khaza-Dhum [sic] with the arrows and the slow sad choir... powerful.

I really enjoy in at the end Return of the King when the Eagles fly through the smoke and pick up Frodo and Sam Weis from the volcano. There are so many though. Two others, both in Return of the King, when Gandolf rides out to the aid of the retreading horsemen, he lifts his staff and scares off the flying monsters (sorry I don't know the names). The one scene that always gets me, is when Aragorn was crowned king and is walking amongst everyone. He reaches the Hobbits and says, "You bow to noone."

Ahhhh man, that always gets me.

On the last one I cut off the last 10 minutes of the film and spliced the credits on right when frodo fell. So it ended there. That was the best, but my manager got mad and yelled at me.

I love the scene where we see Minas Tirith for the first time - when Gandalf and Merry are riding through the town with the camera going around for some 270 degrees. Just a very powerful moment with amazing music to support it.

I've been totally junkying on PJ lately; I am mesmerized by his transistion from Dead Alive to Heavenly Creatures to The Frighteners and of course on to Lord of the Rings.

His first works of Bad Taste, Meet the Feebles and Braindead (Dead Alive) seems miles apart from The Frighteners, The Lord of the Rings 1,2,3 and King Kong.

Somewhere in the middle we get Heavenly Creatures.

To be honest, I've been totally stoked for King Kong, but the latest trailer has me worried.

It wasn't structured well at all, and the effects shots seemed off. Too saturated, maybe. I'll still see it opening night, but I'm trying to deflate my own hype.

I think it'll be some crazy epicness but I admit there are some scenes that have me asking 'What the ****.....?'

Like it's almost too much. The car flying at the 'camera' after Kong flings it is a shot I'm left wondering 'Why?'

I don;t know. It'll probably be epic

The latest-latest Kong trailer is definitely weird, though to me it seemed so due to the lack of final musical score than wonky effects. When you fire your composer with two months 'til release, I guess you steal music from Braveheart for your trailer! Shame too, because I really liked what I was hearing from Howard Shore's score.

Go to apple's trailer site, there is a little behind the scenes video. Different than the Kongisking stuff. Some new shots that are impressive. Plus it is in HD. Looks fantastic on my preview monitor.

God bless Apple and their HD trailers, yeah? Freakin' LOVE that stuff. Downloading my first one of those was like the first time I fired up my LCD projection TV. A big 'wow'.

But we digress! Favorite LotR shot... not a single image, but in the first film, I LOVE the ringwraiths' response to Arwen's challenge at the stream crossing when she does her 'bring it on' sword display. The black riders in a line all unsheathe theirs like, "Oh yeah, beyatch?"

The other favorite is a camera move, also in the first, when the boys fighting on the hill hear Boromir's horn and the camera takes off from the hilltop, keeping its altitude in the trees as the ground falls away under it. Cable cams are COOL!

I LOVE the ringwraiths' response to Arwen's challenge

Good stuff though the purist in my wants to scream at PJ. WHY no GLORFINDEL? I digress though...

I really like the color grading for the first movie. In particular, I am rather fond of the "epic" look in the prologue and the usual look in Rivendell (PJ used several).
