Just bought a 5d MIII, and an 85mm 1.2.. Clicked the lens to manual focus, and the focus ring is super loose, and doesn't move the focusing meter... am I missing something??
Yes, it is a quirk of the 85L. The manual focus ring isn't manual at all, it actuates the usm motor. I think it is the only L glass that has that feature. It works well enough on a dslr, but if you have an unpowered adapter, you are SOL.
