A short created for my church's Father's day service to talk about what Christan father's roles are at home. Shot with GH13. :cheesy:

Looks gorgeous! Did you do ADR for the sound in the scene that starts at 1:08 or was that captured some other way?

Also, which lenses did you use with your GH13 when shooting?

Very nice!

Thanks, Blucross!!

Yes I had to do ADR for the second part of the video due to cheap 2G SD card on my Zoom H2 at the time of shooting. It is my fault though. I had another 16G SDHC and I did not even think to use it instead.

Lenses I used are FD 50mm 1.4 and 85mm f1.8

First part was straight from GH1 inbuilt mic, but because it was shot at a closer range, audio was good enough to use.

I don't have a lot of time, so I only viewed about the first 30 seconds.

There is a current 'style' of camera work that does look a bit more shaky than steady cam, but not so shaky. The few times I watch TV in hotels I've noticed this technique used. Call it the pseudo-reality TV style.

It appears you were going for this... the idea being to give the viewer a 'you are there' feel.

However, what I noticed quite a bit in your film, different from the TV model, is that in the 'TV' version, even though there's a bit of hesitation about focus, framing, eventually the framing and focus settle down to 'standard' conventions.

For quite a few seconds the wife 'covers' the husband's face. To the point one sees only his eyebrows, or at most his eyes. Further on, the wife face is half cut off by the bottom of the frame.

So, ok using the TV style, sure have a little bit of frame adjustment, focus adjustment, as you move from one character to the other, but at some point, the framing should be 'clear' and almost 'conventional'. Just how you got to that framing was 'unconventional'.

I'll see if I have time to watch in full blazing audio later today.

j1clark,
Thank you for your comments. About the scene you are refering to, I realized his face was buried behind while shooting, but decided to keep it. Even in post I had a chance to cut out and use a different angle, but still decided to keep it. I was curious to see how people perceived that scene. And finally you are the first person commenting. That's great!! Perhaps a lot of people felt the same but consciously decided to ignore(?). I would appreciate if you please watch the full length and critique/criticize/comment on all things that come to your mind. I know audio is not good so please go easy on technical part of audio.

I can't watch any religious material, sorry. I caught about a minute or so, and the images looked really nice. Good job!

While I appreciate the vérité style, the compositions with the husband and wife cross the line to the point of distraction in the first scene. The audio recording levels in the kitchen are fine, but too live sounding for me. The on-board mic is going to function more like a pressure-zone device as it "searches" for the proper levels.

The ADR levels sound over-driven in the recording itself?

Thanks for watching, Erik. Sound was not clean nor consistent at all. Once again sound proves to be something I need to work harder at.

Your distraction comment is interesting. But yes I should try to stay with line a bit more.

are u serious? are u making some kind of statement by not watching the video? if u dont like it then just watch it for its technical aesthetics instead and don't pay attention to its religious aspects...simple enough? =)

Anyways I love the images you have produced, couple questions, what mic did you use to ADR sounds beautiful, for some reason though the voices aren't synced up, not sure if it's just my player. Also not really keen on the shot were her head blocks his mouth, you can't see him talk. Otherwise it is a great piece.

I too am not religious and I don't really care for religious things but if your so offended by religious stuff then it's easy to just mentally block it out and focus on technical aesthetics...not hard at all don't really understand why we have to make side comments about that cause then this forum will turn into a huge un-needed debate...

I simply said I don't like watching religious material. I chose to watch about a minute and skip through, and gave my opinion. It's not like I insulted the guy, or anything. He seemed perfectly fine with my comment.

If anyone's turning it into a debate, it's you, my good sir.

As for the audio, I always have a hard time with audio. I never quite know how to make it sound "right," even when I'm using a good mic :P I'm sure with practice you'll get a better ear for it. Better equipment doesn't hurt either!

okay yea i was bit harsh sorry just didnt understand that all. Id still like to know what mic he used for the ADR sounds nice but when they did ADR they stood to close to the mic and it sounds like there voices are in a small room instead of a church or wherever they are at

I am not offended by diego's comment at all. It is his choice and I respect it just like I would like to see my choice respected. Glad to see things didn't get escalated. Well handled guys!!

As for the mic I used for ADR, it is a zoom H2. And you are right, tacklegb, we had the mic so close to actors during ADR, it did not match the sound you would expect from inside of the church. I will definitey keep this in mind the next time I do ADR.

The mic was too close, but jeez it was clean. It also might have been a good idea to add some very slight echo or something. Then again, I'm not a sound guy, so I may be talking out of my butt here.

I hear what you are saying, diego. Next time all these comments will be in my head when planning frames/sounds/acting/voice/etc.
