Faster Processing (CS4)

I'm curious as to if anyone has any experience in workflow to speed up renders in AE. As I export, I have to make sure I purge every 5 to 10 frames or it'll crash. As I'm staring at my two and a half hour render time, though, I'm wondering about something. I currently have about 50 or so layers of text and pictures, but they start and end at the sequence beginning and ending. Would it speed up my render time to trim those layers where they are no longer needed? I figure that if if I can't see them anyway, they aren't necessary. Will it actually speed up the render, though? I would check this out, but I have to wait a handful of hours before this 30 second clip renders.

Use your caps lock key.

No joke, if you engage it, AE stops refreshing the screen - helps a bit to speed things up and is good for RAM issues.

I don't know but in Premiere Pro, the computer has more trouble playing back the timeline if a second (or more) video layer is switched on / visible, even though there is NO footage placed on it at all.
In AE most of the time I cut all layers to only where they're used, just to make sure (and keep it neat).
