fast unwrapping PC software- .MTS to M4v ?

i know that on Mac you can unwrap more easily, but i couldn't find any software on PC.
the reason for asking is trying to keep the size of the edited files the same as the original and
not transcoding them to x5 bigger..

thanks

Why would you want to unwrap/rewrap on a pc ? Pc can edit/play mts files natively. I don't see any reason why you would waste time on a pc?

You can with ffmpeg (command line application), you could even make a batch file (.bat) to batch process all the files in a folder for example

e.g.

ffmpeg -i input.mts -vcodec copy -acodec copy output.m4v

(btw, m4v is just a modified mp4 container)

i work only on Avid, and it has to transcode the files. i thought there's a way of stripping the unnecessary info from the MTS, staying with a smaller H.264/mp4/m4v whatever...
i'm a bit of a noob on all this workflow so be easy on me..:)

Can't avid take the files natively ?

Even if you re-wrap into mp4 container, doesn't avid transcode anyways to dnxhd? or are you saying you can bypass that ?

(when you re-wrap, all you do it put the video & audio streams into a new container , it's not the same as transcoding or re-encoding)

There's about 5-6% overhead in transport streams compared to mp4, so you're not saving that much space

I still don't see the rationale for you doing this

mmm... so you're saying: ditch the rewraping, transcode to a lesser quality DNxHD for offline editing, and then batch import to the optimal DNxHD for online..
well maybe that's the best option (especially when dealing with big projects..)
the thing is- that avid MC5 can work natively with m4v, so if i rewrap i don't need transcoding (although it's a lot heavier on CPU)

I'm not entirely familiar with avid workflow.

I know most people cutting with avid prefer to use dnxhd: it's interpolated to 10-bit 4:2:2 , I don't know if avid behaves the same way with native 8-bit 4:2:0 footage (in other progams you can induce extra "banding" when you do grading and color correcting on native 8-bit footage)

You could ask in the avid forum (or avid subforum on this board) for more details on preferred workflow

But if you want more detailed instructions on re-wrapping or batch processing let me know

oh,
well, at the moment i'll stick to the DNxHD codec, so if i'll need to advance on rewrapping i'll ask you right away, count on it.

thanks
