fast/slow motion experiment

shot this down the street from my house last night. copied the video onto several tracks and made them all play at different speeds with varying levels of opacity. then a little cc and contrast.

same clip but using a different technique to composite the tracks. more action on this one.

Click here to watch sidewalk3 - note: had to move this to putfile as my bandwidth level on my server was reached...

Good idea cheez. It might be kind of cool to have some live action mixed in as well. It looked like you either froze that grab it was so late nothing was hapenning on the street. I'll be doing a project soon involving some stop motion stuff. I prefer special effects like this rather than 100% CG. Another idea using your concept would be to put the dvx on it's slowest zoom and use a remote so the camera doesn't move, and capture you footage using the same zoom in/out and repeating your looping process. All you waould have to do is cue up the tracks so the zoom starts at the same point each time keeping the backgrounds in sync.

It would be a great opening to a short where the live action is the main actor stepping in front of the camera on the side walk.

Looked slick, I liked it a lot. Got old after a while obviously, but even just a few seconds of this in some music video or dream sequence, etc. would add production value.

Looked very cool. I think I'll prolly end up borrowing this technique at some point haha. Really great idea.

actually i just set the camera down on a ledge for about 30 minutes and let it roll. there are 7 tracks of the same footage playing at the same time. the fastest is at 5000% and the slowest at 20%. i didn't have to grab a freeze since the parked cars didn't move and the cam was still. the bottom layer was at 100% opacity with the other 6 varying from 50% down to 10%. i will be posting another version of this shortly using a different technique for compositing.....

yup it does get old after a bit. you're right. it would be something to pop in quickly somewhere to add effect... i just wanted to show this technique i was working on.

Very cool... I'm actually working a flashback sequence right now, so hopefully I can do something along this line... Nice work.

I love two extremes in filmmaking: Hard core dialogue/character driven films, and hard core eye candy stuff (y'know, like all the MTV styles that are regularly bashed around here).

Well, this was some really clever eye candy, I really liked it a lot! Who's the music by?

wow. thanks for watching and thanks for the mad props. music is by the crystal method. kinda old school but seemed to fit. kinda gave it a mitsubishi commercial sorta vibe....

I thought this was really cool. The music was so perfect for the piece. Recognized the crystal method, but what's the track name?

What about camera settings? Was this DVX footage? Again, very cool.

I believe the track he used is called Bad Stone. Drop Crystal Method onto any fast action clip and it'll look and sound great.

Great effect man!

yup, track is called "bad stone" from the album "vegas"

dvx100a footage. scene file 6, factory settings, letterbox mode, iris open, gain on low.

Very impressive and authentic.

You did this all in F5 with factory settings? Nice.

Thanks for pointing out you used different composite modes instead of adjusting opacity.

The color correction work was excellent. Can you say exactly what you did with CC inside FCP to achieve this look? Which specific parameters did you adjust and did you apply any other filters? Any other learnings on this?

Great job!

i think i just leaned the mids a bit toward cyan, pumped the saturation and made the whites whiter and the blacks blacker..... the compositing did a lot for the overall look. here's a grab of the raw footage for reference.

Thanks for sharing the raw screen grab.

This grab further illustrates your fine skills in creating the magical dream effect in the video.

Thanks also for stating your CC tweaks inside FCP.

Very nice work!
