FAST SDHC Memory for the EX1

I am wondering if anyone has reported success with the EX3 and this card/reader combo?
I thought I had originally read that the EX3 was good for this combo but now that I am having problems getting it to work on my EX3, I can't seemed to locate any posts that have had success with this camera

I'm not sure about the Exteme III 30MB/s SDHC and Kensington in the EX3.
For sure it works in the EX1.

Look here and at the "other" forum.

Hey 3hats

This may seem like a stupid suggestion, but have you double checked that you don't have fake cards? Trying to think of anything here.

You can double check by making sure that they have a serial number printed on the side of the actual card.

 diddo on the scandisk express card, it won't work;; also, the SIIG express card is a dud, although you can close the door on the EX-1 with it. I think the Sony express card is a non-floater, too! -- Carl

I've started a new section at the bottom of the KxS page with a summary of the reports I have been reading about which products are and are not compatible. I define compatible as completly reliable HQ recording (not overcranking). I've added the SIIG to the dud list, please let me know through the contact on the web page (below) or this thread if there are any others to add

My honest .02 on the issue-- right now we have pretty much established the reliability of KxS (I love that twist of a trademark, which my editors would never let me use in print). I personally am not going to experiment with any other adapter.

I anxiously await, however, the arrival of the SanDisk Ultra II 32gb SDHC, which should be any time from mid-November to early Dec.

I agree, I have KxS and don't need to look further however I see the value in finding other alternatives purely because it may be easier for someone else to find one solution over another. Locally I can't buy the Kensington adaptor, I had to import from the US...

Also, I keep seeing people asking over and over does this or that adator work, these threads are great but too big now to easily find such info so it is also just a summary for them.

A question to Transcend SDHC card users. There are various reports of these brand cards working or not working but not enough information about the specific models it applies too.

According to Transcend web site
http://www.transcendusa.com/Products/Modlist.asp?CatNo=78&LangNo=0

They have a few types of SDHC cards

150x Class 6 in 4 & 8GB (Yellow sticker)
http://www.transcendusa.com/Products/ModDetail.asp?ModNo=147&LangNo=0

133x 2GB (SD only, no class rating) (orange sticker) http://www.transcendusa.com/Products/ModDetail.asp?ModNo=189&LangNo=0

Unspecificed Class 6 SDHC 4/8/16GB (Blue Label)
http://www.transcendusa.com/Products/ModDetail.asp?ModNo=127&LangNo=0

If you have tried, or are using this media over the Sandisk could you please let us know which one you have and if it was successful or not. I wouldn't be suprised if only the 150x card was the one that worked but it only goes to 8GB.

I still see little reason not to go Sandisk but it would be good to clear up the Transcend card discrepencies.

Right now, the KxS is the best working solution for using SDHC cards in the EX1 and EX3.
At least until we find a working solution equal or better than the KxS that allows the EX1 door to close.

The KxS is capable of overcranking 40FPS at 24P without an error in the EX.
This overcrank is an equivalent of approx 8.3MB/s.

We know the Kensington specs should offer the full SanDisk Ultra II 15MB/s data rate, but for "some reason", we are limited to 8.3MB/s.

It would be nice to know if this bottleneck is the way Sony is using the USB Protocol (or they possibly intentionally crippled the USB datarate).? Or, is it a problem with the Kensington 7-in-1 expresscard adaptor?

We can learn the answer to these questions with a USB 2.0 to USB Mode ExpressCard reader.
The Sony expresscard reader is PCIe based and will not work with our KxS USB based adaptor.

Here's one USB 2.0 to USB Mode ExpressCard that would be nice to try:
http://www.synchrotech.com/product-usb/usb20_to_usb20_expresscards_host_adapter_microu2e-mv.html

We could run the Crystal Disk Mark PC utility datarate memory tester on our KxS.
If we are able to get the 15MB/s sustained R/W datarates, we will know that the problem is with the way Sony is using the USB, or they intentionally crippled the USB datarate.

This certainly will explain why their own USB PHU-60K drive barely works in HQ mode. It has lots of "restore media" errors and also explains why it's not fast enough to run S&Q modes.

When you say I should see a serial on the 'side' of the card do you mean the back or the actual side?
There is a SN on the back.
What is the KxS reader?
I am using the Kensington 7-1 with no success
thanks

Scratch the KxS question-I get it.
I will try purchasing another kensington reader in hopes of getting this to work
thanks

Then you have a defective Kensington 7-in-1. Or, you bought a fake Ultra II SDHC card, or possibly bought a "non-approved" card from all of our tests done over the last month.

Most of us are using the Kensington.
I own four and they all work great.

What are using for an SDHC card?

The best working combo is the KxS (Kensington and SDHC card).
Kensington 7-in-1
SanDisk Ultra II 15MB/s SDHC cards.
OR
SanDisk Extreme III 30MB/s version SDHC cards (new version)

IMPORTANT UPDATE:

Alister Chapman just tested the Kensington with the SanDisk Extreme III 30MB/s SDHC card in his laptop expresscard USB based reader.

It matches the specs of the SDHC card compared to using a SanDisk USB reader in his PC.

This is good and bad news!

This now concludes that the issue is with Sony's EX camera implementation of USB data control.
OR, worst yet, they intentionally crippled the USB data rate!
We caclulate that the Sony is limiting no more than approx, 8.3MB/s data rate via USB.
Probably a bit higher since we can maintain this datarate without errors.

Sony, PLEASE fix the USB datarate problem.

This may allow your own PHU-60K to not have "restore media" errors.
Which we know are directly tied to datarate. We determined this by using slow SDHC cards in the Kensington reader. They also were infected with "restore media" errors.

IMO, and many will agree, the ability to use SDHC cards is a breakthrough for Sony.
This itself, will increase camera sales. Also, it will allow you to manufacture a better working
SDHC card reader that will allow the EX1 memory door to close with the SDHC card inserted.

:2vrolijk_08: Again, the transcend 16Gig. is the fastest SDHC card I have tested (S&Q 48) and it works with the i<dot> express adaptor. The IxT combo has problems on startup finding the memory chip; other than that, I have two installed and can record 116Min. in HQ without stopping, for about ~$120..00 (minus the adaptors.) That beats the ~$2000.00 for two 16Gig. Sony SXS memory sticks for 100Min. --Carl Marxx

I've ran the Ultra II 15MB/s at 45 FPS, but feel safer calling it 40FPS, since it for sure fails at 50 FPS.

GuyB - thanks for the wonderful work. Can you please also add a section on your site about where to find the 1.11 files and a couple of steps on how to go about upgrading the EX1. With 20 pages of discussion here, it is not that easy to piece all this information together.
