FAST SDHC Memory for the EX1

Sorry If this has been covered somewhere else but where in the camera tells me my current firmware version and where can I download the latest one?

$75.oo for 58Min.

$75.oo for 58Min.

:):kali: News flash! Thanks SteveT for the clean upgrade vesion 1.11 for this great camera. I did the upgrade installation and it works! Now, I can use my 8Gig. Lexar Express card in the camera. Only problem is that at times, after recording, I would have to "RESTORE" the memory card before I could record again -- a bumber!!! I will work well if you have a long 28Min. clip (the Lexar gives 3Min. more than the Sony SxS card, or as the spec. say.) Good news everyone, I've found another working solution for a cheap memory combination for the EX-x cameras: fasten your seatbelts! Faster than a locomotive, more powerfull than a speeding bullet, ops; let's settel down here; I have sucessfully been able to shoot over an hour video with (without any errors) the 16Gig. Transcend SDHC card Model # TS1GSDHC6 along with the I <dot> Connect 18-1 Express card adaptor. The astounding thing is I paid 24.99 for the adaptor and 59.99 for the memory card, about ~$85.00 + tax for the whole thing, and Transcend even gives you a High speed USB adaptor with it; can't go wrong with that. Better, it seems in the HQ mode, it delivers 58+ min. There are some other minor things you should know about with this comb, I will tell you more after doing more testing and will get back to yu-all -- Carl (on the) Marxx

Good news Carl! Welcome to 1.1 !

Yes, it sounds like your Lexar SDHC card is not fast enough, set that one aside.

Hmm..
I could of swore someone checked the I-dot-Connect 18-1 Expresscard... Apparently not.
I do believe I pulled it out of the box in Frys Electronics and thought I remembered it will not allow the EX1 memory door to close with the SDHC inserted. Is this correct?

Now, lets see how high you can overcrank 24P without erroring.
Set your camera to 720 24P and turn on S&Q and set it to 40 FPS.
Find out the highest FPS it will overcrank before it errors.

SteveT, you're right, the door won't close; but, I would pull the chip after recording anyway, and permenantly leave the adaptor in with the door closed. I will try to "crank the hell out of it" later and let you know the results. By the way, the conditions of this combo is that you can't not have SxS memory at boot-up, and you must initialize the camera by inserting the card after boot-up into the adaptor (both rec and p/b.) after that is done you can insert afterwards the SxS memory if you like. I am going out today and pick-up another 16Gig. card and adaptor and try a dual pair in the camera and see what the results are; I will let you know. This would give almost 2hours of HQ video for about $100.00. Keep in mind, this is only preliminary testing -- a work in progress, you might say; but, it looks promising. --- Carl :dankk2:

Hi Steve,

I read on that other forum about an issue of removing just the SD card when you have two KxS modules installed. I can confirm this is a problem and you should not just pull the SD card out of the reader. The camera (EX1) stops recording and gets messed up with what media is where. To recover you have to eject the readers and insert them again (and likely run the recover media process on the on that was recording at the time).

I have updated my web page on this to reflect this.

This is not a problem to me, it just means treating KxS just like SxS where you eject the complete package from the camera before swapping SD cards, or just assign a single card to a single reader...

Cheers

Guy

Hi. I did not understand (I read all thread. Maybe it's my english) if you found a "professionally" usable solution (read/write at same speed and reliability of sxs).

Thanks

GuyB, where's you're site?

Alvise

GuyB,
Yes I just read this. This only seems to be the case when using two Kensington Adaptors.

You're right, if you're using two Kensington adaptors just use them like SxS cards and they will act the same.

It kind of makes sense that the EX won't flag the SDHC card removed since the system only knows removal of the entire expresscard (SxS).

:Drogar-Mark-04(DBG) The SxS cards leave a memory in the camera, so when you remove them and insert the adaptors even with the memory in place, the camera won't pick up that the SDHC memory is there! Therefore, the adaptor has a feature to send a signel to the camera when the chip is inserted allowing the camera to see it as hardware; this is why some other adaptors won't work.
If you leave the memory SDHC (even both slots) permanently in, the camera will pick-up their presents even after the camera is turnd off. Anyway, I have 116Min. (2x58) of HQ video that so far seems to be reliable for ~$120.00; that's about a dollar a minuite, and that is were it should be -- Carl

:-)

I just finished running a test of all 5 of my Ultra II 16GB cards. After I read a problem of one Sandisk Ultra II in that other forum I just wanted to do a basic check of each card. 5 Hours of 100% no problem contineous recording in HQ, swapping KxS by ejecting the combo, switching cards and re-inserting. Some cards needed formating as this was the first time in the camera, of course, no problems.

I think this is a good basic test to do with any media you get for a solid state camera anyway. Its not like you're wearing the heads doing it...

It is interesting to note that some of those differences don't seem to apply to the 15MBps Ultra II's. If you look at my image of the Ultra II packaging I got, there was no hologram etc The only other option is the fakes I got perform as well as the real thing ;-0 (only joking, I don't believe mine are fake)

It could be packaging is locality based as well (my packaging in Australia could well be different to packaging in the US).

Anyone know if the EU version of the Kensington (33407EU) behaves alike the US one?
I doubt they are different, but maybe someone has tested already...?

I actually have one on order from a local supplier however it is about 2+ weeks now and they still havn't filled the order so I doubt they will come through with the order...

I am currently recording on my Ex1 with Kensington adapter bought from UK thru Amazon and Sandisk 16Gb Ultra II SDHC 15mbs cards bought thru BMC digital UK - running S&Q at 45 - no problems to report - at 50 I get a media error which checks out with everyone elses findings.

By the way the Sandisk cards package have no hologram, but the cards themselves have serial numbers on the back, and a hologram word "Sandisk"
you can't see this till you open the package.
