FAST SDHC Memory for the EX1

Thanks lanvin.
I was not the one who discovered it. I believe Alister made this discovery for the EX3.

Myself, GuyB and several others have been trying to discover the best solution.
Life has just got a lot easier. I absolutely hate dealing with off-loading video to another drive in the field.

Heck, you could own TEN 16GB SDHC cards for $600 (SanDisk Ultra II 15MB/s version) ! Unreal

You know what my fear is from here? I am sure Sony are aware of our efforts, success and failings etc

What if, in the next firmware, they deliberatly disable the use of these adaptors...

You put your camera in for service and it comes back 'crippled'...

Be very careful with firmware updates from here on....

So Steve, are you confident the Sandisk Ultra 11 32Gb 15MBs will work fine?

I can't see why it won't. Two of those would give me a huge amount of recording time for way less than a single 16Gb SXS card. In fact if they work fine I would be selling 4 of my 16Gb SXS cards while the price is still high.

Thing is I doubt Sony could disable the use of the cheap cards and not affect the ability to use its own usb recorder.

I would believe it would work, but DON"T go on my assumption.
Only buy it from a place you have easy access and ability to return for refund in the event "for some reason" it does not work.

I bet Sony could simply look at something like the USB device identifier for the card reader and only work with IDs it knows are Sony SxS products... or something like that. I would be a deliberate ploy to dissable it...

Well, pray your camera does not fail.
Also, over the next year or two, things are moving quick with fast memory improvements.

They would be smart to use this as a selling point and build accesories and offer fast competitve SDHC cards.

Stevet,
thanks to you I´m all over the EX3 again, grrrrrrrrr
Until recently I decided NOT to buy sth new, mostly because I was waiting for Canon to bring out the "holy grail" (= great image with cheap recording)
Well, thanks to you the holy grail could already be available to everyone

I just read your sig, and I couldn't agree more, but my sig would be like this

I LIKE FOOD. FOOD IS GOOD. FOOD IS EVIL!

Its taken me 2.5 years to loose the 26kg that this evil, glorious lovely food put on over the last 15+ years

So, yeah, as a proud new owner of a EX-1, I'm glad to have come across this thread. I've seen it before but never bothered reading it. Now I feel like I've been under a rock for 10 years. This is great stuff. Thanks to Alistar and those who discovered this, and thank you to stevet and the rest who've been posting all this great info on what works best.

I have a d90 so getting these cards will double up on its uses. Just to be clear on what I've read, the SanDisk Ultra II's will work just as well as the Ultra III's? This seems to be what's been said. Pls correct me if i'm wrong.

You guys rock.

Yes, the SanDisk Ultra II will work as well as the new SanDisk Extreme III with the Kensington 7-in-1 reader in the EX1 or EX3.

Yo Stevet,

Need firmware ver. 1.1 as I've read. Now am I right in that a camera that doesnt already have version 1.1 cannot be updated by the user? The camera I'm picking up tomorrow was purchased in March. It's a great deal but now I'm concerned that it wont have the right firmware version.

Am I in trouble here?

Edit: Nevermind, I just got the zip files from this thread. Thanks Fohdeesha.

Question... Has anyone tried other readers besides the Kensington? Or, to be more clear, are there any readers that allow you to close the door of the card slots on the EX1?

Also, has anyone tried a 32gb, like the Sandisk II memory card, with the EX1 (and the new firmware)?

Thank you.

E.H.

The SanDisk 32GB Ultra II is not out yet. But is should be out very soon.

Also, just check the threads here and at the "other" forum. We've tried just about every expresscard reader available.

The AFT PROExpress-7 allows the EX1 door to close, but has not been confirmed with the Ultra II. It does NOT work with the new Extreme III SDHC!

I have the AFT and it seems to work for the first 20 minutes, then starts to fail. I'm not sure if this is the nature of this card, or I may have a defective one.

Right now, the safe bet is still the Kensington 7-in-1 which I've been testing with the new 16GB Extreme III SDHC and 4GB Ultra II SDHC. These are rock solid and have never generated an error in the last two weeks of testing.

Note, these only overcrank up to 40FPS. Any more and they will error. So I suggest only using these for HQ and SP model only.

This is fine since you can always use your SxS when you need the slo-mo.

yeeeee haaaaa!!!! Giddy up, My first Kensington adaptor just arrived from B&H. I have taken some photos along the process of trying it out for others to see later, and as expected, so far, with my Sandisk 16GB Ultra II 15MBps card it is all working hunky doorey...

It is currently running its first test, a full card record in HQ 108050i (that will take around an hour). Then I'll start to thrash it some more to see how she fares. I guess I will have to look into this overcranking too as I havn't even looked at that feature of the camera yet.

You know, you could actually get away with a single SxS card, one Kensington reader and a bunch of Ultra II's. All you would need to do is switch over to the SxS card when the SD fills up, the camera willautomatically sitch over to the SxS, then once switch, swap out the SD card in the reader then switch back to the Kensington using the Switch Slot button.

Of course, multiple Kensington's just make it easier...

Congrats GuyB.
Keep us posted on the 16GB Ultra II performance.

If you're up for it, switch over to 720 24P and turn S&Q mode ON and set it to 40FPS.
If you can quickly start and stop recording this say 5 to 6 times and then leave it to record for 15 minutes or more without an error, I'd say we have a match for their smaller 4GB Ultra II SDHC which I own.

Having said that and your tests past, less than $70 buys the 16GB Ultra II which will work fine for all HQ modes!

Here is what I did:

1: Recorded a full 16GB of contineous HQ recording: MYTH CONFIRMED
2: Start Stop recording tested over and over: MYTH CONFIRMED
3: Switched between a SxS and K+16GB Sandisk Ultra II 15MBps card over and over and over.... I got bored doing it so had to stop. The SxS took about 4 sec to go from Red to Green when switching to the Sandisk, the Sandisk took about 6 sec to go to green (1.5-2 seconds longer) but it did it reliably every time and I was switching as fast as the lights were turning green: MYTH CONFIRMED
4: Changes to 720 24p and overcranked to 40fps. Start/Stop recording many times no problem, left recording for at least 30min until the battery died and the camera actually stops recording itself a few min before total shutdown (I looked it said 3min battery but refused to record, card light is green, interesting to know this is how the camera handles very low battery states) anyway: MYTH CONFIRMED
5: Played back clips in MEDIA mode without any problems at all, even 15x play speed worked just fine. MYTH CONFIRMED

I just ordered another 4x 16GB Sandisk Ultra II 15MBps cards. For all intents and purposes SxS prices no longer matter to me and I would not buy any more unless there was only about a 15-20% price premium over the affore mentioned card. I have enough for full Slow Mo it I want to do that, the rest is just standard HQ and I'd MUCH MUCH MUCH rather a slower off load in post (still very fast though) than have to worry about backing up and formating in the field. Yes, that is me just ranting but hoping Sony get the picture...

Just ordered my K+16gb Ultra II myself. Gonna rock one for now. When the 32's release I'll be on that ship.
