FAST SDHC Memory for the EX1

But Tomas, what if it is reliable? This is what we are trying to establish and these forums are a great source of wide spread testing information.

Oh, and have you seen the new JVC HD camera at IBC recording straight to SDHC media? The media is reliable, as long as the process of recording to it is.

Steve,

i'm sure there is a lot of people who apreciate your work and such solutions are way to go,
but i guess i'm pass through this period trying to find something cheaper, cause home made
solutions will never be so reliable, it's just because of reliability..

OK, you've made your point several times here.
You're right in the sense there has not been enough testing.

"Again", I've already stated that in my post that the Kensington/new Extreme III
seems to be working with the EX1.
Hence, why I mentioned for no one to run out and buy one:

As far as "home made". You make it sound like someone built this in their home.
They sell and are designed for expresscard to SDHC.
It's only one of the MANY expresscard readers that are widely available.

It's no big deal really man....
Also, I was not the first to try this on an XDCAM. Alister reported it worked on his EX3.

Heck, the REDONE is using CF cards. Those cards are notorious for easily bending pins....

Just ordered a 16gb Extreme III and should have it in a couple of days.

Will report on testing but from what others have been reporting, I expect it to work in my EX3 with Kensington reader.

Great nsoltz.
Let us know how it works.

I've been running the EX1 with this combo this morning filling the Extreme up right to "Full Media". It's been working great!

Also, I just leave the expresscard in the EX1 and pull out the Extreme SDHC card and pop it into my reader on the laptop.

I can play back the videos without the slightest stutter right from the SHDC card. These cards are real fast.

Guys.. this is some great news for EX1 users. I was hoping that someone would find out this kind of solution for P2 cards. If this does work and Sony supports it somehow... this would topple the side totally in Sony's favor. Manalive that's some great news and keeps a lot of people from buying these solidstate cameras.

BTW.. I love the series 6 SD cards.. great stuff indeed and Transcend makes a great product and super cheap!

Day three testing the expresscard adaptor / Extreme SDHC in the EX1:

1, Kensington 7-in-1 Media Reader $ 36 (USD)
1, SanDisk Extreme III 16GB 30MB/s version $129 (USD)

No issues recording or playing any of the HQ or SP modes (No S&Q)

Now all you have to do is drill holes in the sliding door of your new camera to close it (so the SDHC memory can stick out) and every thing will be perfect! - Carl

I'll leave that to you... LOL

Actually, I'm not that concerned about the memory door. Even Sony's new video capture hard drive forces you to leave the compartment open. You have no choice with their drive. It's an expresscard adapter with the drive attached via cable.

Having said that, it's only a matter of time where we find one of the spring type media compartment expresscards to work with the EX1.

I've got one on order I'll be trying next week.

Have you tried in S&Q mode or do you mean it doesn't work in S&Q?

It does not work in S&Q mode. Either does Sony's new EX series video capture drive PHU-60K.

This is no big deal since you can always throw in a SxS card to capture overcrank effects.

I'm looking forward to checking out the Extreme III 32GB SDHC card.

Steve, I think my Kensington reader is going to take a LOOOONG time to come from the local dealer, if they ever actually get it in so I ordered a few online which have to come from the states but will still probably get here faster.

I am really keen to see if my Ultra II 15MBps card works as well as your Ultra III 30MBps.

PS I completely agree about S&Q modes, however shouldn't there only be a problem in slow motion mode where the data rate is higher? In Quick motion the data rate is lower than normal.

GuyB, you have the EX3, right?

I have not tried the Ultra II SDHC 15MB/s with the Kensington. I ended up returning it since it did not work with the AFT expresscard adaptor.... BUT, it turns out the AFT did not work well wih any SDHC in the EX1.

Right now, the Kensington and the new Extreme III 30MB/s works great. I'm on day four of testing and have yet to see one error using all HQ modes (even 720 60P) and SP modes.

I have not tested undercranking in S&Q....
Knowing overcranking causes errors, I just soon stay away from that mode.

It probably will work though.
