Fantasy Look

Robbie Comeau

Como's back. back again
Hi all, did a search, didn't find much.

I am eager to make a short film (10-15 minutes).
I would like to make a fantasy. Now, not fantasy as in full out dragons and stuff, just a film, "fantasyish" but more or less, a fantasy "look"...

Can you guys give me advice on what i can do to my camera, (in settings) to get hte fantasy look? Out of camera?

I am using a dvxb, a Rode mic with a boom pole, and i can hopefulyl get some lighting.

I am using right now, a couple of layers of plastic wrap, to give a nice soft effect around and through the whole image, and it works. Is there anything else you guys can throw at me, on how to get this nice look?

Thanks!

You have tossed a fine question here ... I would say the best place for this kind of question comes under 'Cinematography' ... Anyway its always good to get a sound start from somewhere ...

Fantasy looks differently in different films ... It is different for 'Alice in the Wonderland' ... 'Chronicles of Narnia' ... 'Labyrinth' ... 'Unfortunate Events' ... 'Chocolate Factory' ... & 'Wizard of OZ' ... etc.

But there are something in common to all of them:

Category Implicit Features:
1- All have 'soft edges' (varies but soft edges is a must).
2- All have 'high contrast'.
3- All have 'low shadow region darkness' or 'Low black level'.
4- All have 'higher (depends how high is needed) brightness level'.
5- All have 'dandy/bright colors'.
6- All have 'high wide-angle shot frequency'.
7- All have 'under-crank shots more than others'

Category Demanding Features:
1- All have 'Neutral(mostly but not necessary) and more Lighting than normal'.
2- All have 'exotic locations'.
3- All have 'unique costumes'.
4- All have 'unique accent'.

Any suggestions ...
