Famous lens maker Schneider-Kreuznach joins Micro Four Thirds

Rockin the Boat
German lens maker Schneider-Kreuznach has announced it is joining the Micro Four Thirds system standard established by Olympus and Panasonic. The company has not announced what it plans to contribute to the system - whether it will adapt its existing cine primes or develop entirely new designs for the system. The move follows Japanese maker Cosina joining in August 2010 which has resulted in the launch of the Voigtländer Nokton 25mm F0.95.

My favourite part

What it says is, they will do something. Adds more competition - thats good. Shows lens manufacturers are seeing the market for 4/3" cine glass - great news.

Worst case they only adapt their cine lenses. One would hope they see a big enough market to come up with a new line though.

At the same time that I bought my Panasonic LX5, my friend bought the Samsung TL500 (we went together to Samy's). My panny has a Leica lens 24mm-90mm f2.0-f3.3. His Samsung, has a Schneider-Kreuznach 24mm-72mm f1.8-f2.4. Subsequently we swapped them with each other for a couple of days. I had to admit, that nice as the Leica was, the Schneider-Kreuznach was even nicer, f.ex. at 24mm my Leica had some slight barrel distortion, which was - to my eyes - absent at 24 on the Schneider-Kreuznach (brick wall test). Plus, I thought the Schneider-Kreuznach was actually sharper throughout the range compared to Leica (up to 72mm).

So yeah, I have high hopes for this. Anyone with or looking at the AF100 or the GH2 should be delighted. I feel like Christmas came early this year!

Agreed here -- Voigtlander didn't just adapt existing lenses, they designed a lens specifically for m43 and it's a runaway smash hit. If Schneider makes some dedicated cine primes for m43, that would be huge.

Just used Schneider lenses on a 80MP stills back. I hope they rock the boat!

+1 (stills and cine capable).

>and it's a runaway smash hit

I love the 25mm for stills more and more.
