Family, mud and vertical lines

My GH1 is back to the shop due to severe vertical lines but left us with nice memories after visiting the family during last weekend.

I was putting my professional cameraman hat aside and filmed like a father.
My aim was to use it like “home video” and not like a “film camera”. Editing is quick and dirty, and I am sure you will see the beauty and ugly footage this little camera can make.

Camera mode: creative, smooth. 1080/25 (if you survive watching it all, from 4:10 it is 720/50 uprezed to 1080).
Various shutter speeds with the intention to stay on 50 (my ND filter did not come in time)… + kit lens

Edited on Premiere CS2, footage was converted with Prospect 4k to AVI.
Contrast/brightness adjustment and reducing red color a bit.

For me this is a missed opportunity by Panasonic. It is so close yet so far away for being a perfect camera. I hope the vertical lines could be fixed by firmware update and more advanced work can be done with confidant.

Thanks.

Johnnie saw were you are from and then went and watched every second. Austria is such a beautiful country.

I noticed vertical streaks when I first started shooting but they became seemed to fade over the first 2-3 days.

beautiful looking stuff. Back in the day we paid 3 times this amount for an XL1 which was horrible in low-light, murder when dealing with red source light, and ergonomically formed like a brick....

Its becoming humorous what we get for 1500 bucks. This looks better than the 30K betacam I used to use at my old job....

J Davis, I hope I was lucky like you were...

I'm sure it will be fine over time, just do a lot of shooting at all sorts of light levels to burn it in. In my signiture there is a link to a a vid I did called He's up, he's gone. This was very low light test 1080p24 at 1000 ISO.

My final output to vimeo was 720p which will mask any streaks but even the 1080p looked surprisingly good. All streaking I saw when the camera first arrived had faded. Here is a screen grab from the 1080p file after it has had the mids raised in color.

EDIT: I don't advocate the use of shooting in the dark at 1000 ISO as regular practice and this vid was about me pushing the cam to its extremes.
As you can see, after the sensor has been used a lot, streaking problems fall to below an acceptable low light noise level. This was shot 3 to 4 bars below on the LCD's exposure meter.

Nice video.

There is some serious irony here. The footage is stunning and I saw minimal evidence of mud and no banding whatsoever. So having produced such a well shot video, you then decided to take the GH1 back?

No camera is perfect especially not for this kind of money.

The MJPEG mode may be 720p but if you want cleaner fine detail and a guarantee of no mud why not just shoot MJPEG for those scenes which would benefit from it? That's what it's there for... as a fall back when the fragile 1080p mode fails. Even on my 50 inch plasma I am hard pressed to see much difference in resolution between well shot 720p and 1080p footage if sat at a normal viewing distance.

What are you going to replace your GH1 with? I think it did your memories justice there... and your talent.

I did shoot some mountain/scenes on the first day or so with mine and found that pjpeg was a little noisy for these. But yeah, you have to be really measurebating to see any great difference in a lot of cases.

Opherba,
Have to agree with everyone else, most of this did look very clean and though there was some blocking/artifacts in a few shots, for the most part it looked great.
