Fake rocks

I need to make some fair sized fake rocks (going to use that pink foam stuff) for a film. I can't use real rocks, because I need interaction between the rocks and the characters (like picking them up), and real one's would be way too heavy. I have no problems glueing, cutting, shaping the rocks, but does anyone know of any tutorials, or step-by-steps for painting a rock texture on them to make them look like rocks? Or can anyone give me a step-by-step? Thanks for the help.

Are you talking like boulder size rocks? Rocks would be tough IMHO to make, and make them look half way decent. There are companies out there that specialize in making fake ones for landscaping. So as to put speakers in them and such. But I believe they have wire framing with fiberglass surround. That much fiberglass is not cheap to buy though. Are they smooth football size rocks? That may be do-able. It will take some time though. I thought maybe plaster, but it depends on the interaction. Plaster would bust apart on impact when fibreglass wouldnt. One thing that helps is that stone looking paint available at all hardware stores. Here is a pdf file I found that might help you.

Anyway good luck with it.
