hi, i just got a telephoto lens (75-300) and was testing it outside with my fader ND. i noticed all my footage is soft. waaay too soft. not useable by a long shot. i did some searching and found that pretty much all of the fader NDs have this problem when shooting telephoto, even the newest ones.

what i couldnt find is if anyone has found a fader ND that will NOT go soft and destroy the sharpness at the telephoto ranges.

im thinking of ditching the faders all together and just using regular ND filters if no one can vouche for one.

Actually, I've never used my fader ND. I prefer working with 4x4 glass anyway and from what I've seen the fader ND's are doing some baaad things to your sharpness. Imo excluded in any form of serious work...

Basicly always using ND8 outdoors.

Singh-Ray's Vari-ND and Vari-N-Duo don't have the softness issue from what I've heard. Neither does a DIY fader made with high quality filters.

My Singh Ray Vari-ND is pretty good at 200, but you can notice a little softness. Not nearly as much as with my friend's Fader ND Mark II.

I notice a little softness with both, just sticking it on the lens, set to minimum filtering. I think the Singh Ray is good at most focal lengths, and acceptable (for me) at 200. The Fader Mark II is noticeably worse (unacceptable to my eye a long lengths). Too bad, because LCW has the better form factor. I live with the Singh Ray on outdoors. I keep a step-up ring and 77mm cap in each lens case.
