Fader ND + Circular Polarizer(stacked together)

Hello Friends,

I have ordered Fader ND + Circular Polarizer from light craft and they will be here within a week.

I intend to mount the Circular Polarizer in front of Fader ND to get the clear blue sky.

Has anybody tried putting Circular Polarizer in front of Fader ND?

Will it affect the image in any adverse way?

Thanks.

Yes, that's what I've heard and I've also read that if you put a Circular Polarizer in front of another Circular Polarizer, it cancels out the polarizer effect.

Seems to work OK

Seems to work OK

I locked the fader at the minimum and then varied the polariser and seems to vary the saturation as required. Only problem is vignetting, you need to be at about 18-19mm without vigeneting in the corners! so unless the polariser is really thin you may of been better getting a 67mm fader and polariser and a step-up ring from 62-67? You can still see tiny amounts of vigneetting with the std 62mm fader at 28mm, even though it widens to a 67mm thread.

I was surprised to get some vignetting with the kit lens when attaching a Circular Polarizer to the Fader ND - even though I bought a 67mm Fader (used a 62-67 step-up) and the Fader then steps up to 72mm. So the CP is a 72mm and I still get vignetting with the kit lens at 14. Have to go to 18 to clear it. Slap a 72mm wide angle lens hood on that set-up and the vignetting doesn't clear until about 35. Even without the CP and with the lens hood, still get vignetting until about 25.

Going to try asking again if anyone might know or test if a circular polarizer would work attached before putting on the Fader ND. So the filters can be one size instead of getting a larger one to attach after the Fader ND.

I can't tell you if a circular polarizer would work attached before the Fader ND because I have the opposite set up. But I can say that I've had some effect of a circular polarizer when using the Fader by itself (which is to be expected). Glare from windows being reduced, for example. In that case, there was lots of light and I also needed the ND. So it was killing two birds.

In fact, even though I have a B&W circular polarizer, I've never used it - simply because I've found that the circumstances where I probably would use it have also called for using the Fader ND and I haven't needed the CP. I use the Fader ND to control exposure and honestly can't say whether it also functions like a CP regarding blue sky and clouds. Will need to pay attention to that and do some testing.

Noticed that the excellent Costa Rica fishing video used a VariND Filter and B&W Circular Polarizer (in some shots), so I assume there are circumstances with bright light and lots of glare where both would be needed. http://vimeo.com/6636855

The idea of having all the filters one size instead of getting a larger one to attach after the Fader ND makes a lot of sense. Maybe someone else will be able to shed some light on that. Sorry if I've just rambled without answering your question.
