Factory Footage - Montage of giant greasy machines!

Greetings all,

I did a quick edit last night on some HVX footage I shot at my dad's factory in NH. Was shot in about 30 minutes on 2 P2 cards. Shot handheld at mostly 48fps, 720P, set for low-light and low noise in the cam. Turned B and W in FCP with some diffusion and glow added for effect.

Pretty much an ambient/ avante guarde piece with some synth music that seemed to fit late last night. The factory is huge with these giant textile machines churning out lace and other textiles. I shot it for my Dad since he paid for the tickets to go up to NH.


Let me know what ya'll think. I have a couple of more experiments coming from the vacation. Got to love the HVX!

That was very cool, although I think that 24 fps might be a little slow at times for the fast motion of the machinery -- on occasion there was some judder.

It was also great to see that there is still some manufacturing going on in this country. Give my regards to your dad!
 
Very well done hats off to ya, i liked the 48fps i especially like the second to last shot. this convinced me to buy the camera have been debating the wait for red but work goes on. thanks
 
Thanks guys. Yes.. a bit of that shake and some strobing off the Flos overhead. I do like the slow-mo though in that it smooths out the handheld and really allows for some good transitional shots.

Terry... I'm glad this helped to convince ya. I would like to get the Red as well.. but waiting that long would have been torture. I think that even if this doesn't yield HD as an end result.. it's still stunning SD and the clients love the results. I shoot HD or DVCPRO50 regardless.... It's a bigtime workhorse and it makes shooting FUN again. Now, it's been a long time since that was the case!

I too was convinced to buy this camera when I saw Jarred's UCLA basketball footage and then got to see that snowfall footage.. and Kevin's wolves. It's great to share on this site and get inspiration from others....

electricpig... Thanks for the kind word.. especially after I checked out your website. You have some cracking visuals on that website. Man, that online demo you have is awesome! What else do you have coming up? Any HVX stuff?


Simply looked unbelievable and such high end clients.. How's the UK, BTW? I was born In Derby and grew up in Nottingham. I"m hoping to get back next summer to shoot a little documentary...

720pn, 24 timeframe overcranked to 48fps, Detal +3, Verticle Detail +3, Detail Coring +7, zeros for chroma level, phase, color temp, -5 master PED, Cinelike D, Matrix Cine-Like...

Tint in FCP, diffusion and glow added...


I think any noise factor completly seems to go away when the color is taken out. As Evinsky pointed out before the noise is in the Red channel.. I believe... I have a Sci Fi horror piece I"m doing in a couple of weeks... Should be done in B&W...

I am loving it, of course. Going tonight to shoot some airplane and helicopter footage. Haven't figured out what settings I am going to use for the golden hour :)
 
Loved the footage as well... and I am very curious as to what your father's factory does? I too am very excited to see some USA manufacturing and RARELY see textiles here anymore.
 
Thanks all. It was fun to shoot and edit.. more so than stuff for clients. My dad's factory makes primarily Lace. They make high end stuff for Victoria Secrets and Frederick's of Hollywood, offshore manufacturers.. etc. It's called Hope Lace in Nashua, NH. Most of the stuff is bands and frills and whatever. Funny story was when they made a fabric with 100 different sexual positions showed out... the employees were stealing it so much that they had to put cameras on the machines... They never bothered to rip anything else off..

Anyway, my dad's been in the textile/lace business for over 40 years... it was the family business and he was hoping that either me or my bros would go into it.. but no one took him up on that. It's something that he loves to do, but long hours in a dark factory with all that fabric and thread. I hated tying that stuff together and it's so piddly and manual... Would give me headaches doing that mess... However, my dad is one of the premiere guys in what he does. I think it's the most productive textile plant in the world.. running at 95 percent efficiency 24 hours a day, 7 days a week...


I do get some great perks... Tons of earplugs, tons of waste lace to use to soak up fake blood... and He Just agreed to let me shoot a fight scene and something else there... That should be cool.. Anyone up in NH/Mass looking to help out sometime?

Justyn, don't spoil your time in the spotlight commenting on my work (but thanks!)

Your little film was mesmerising, some lovely composition, and not afraid to push the highlights, which is refreshing. B/W (which I love shooting in stills) only emphasised the light. It reminds me of some of the lighting in Metropolis?
I bet your dad never saw his machines in this way before!

We're currently in a heatwave in the UK - even the roads are melting.

I was in Derby with my best mate a few weeks back - I love the area, especially the Peaks. I spent 3 very happy years in the Midlands while at college studying Graphics at Staffs Poly (before it made itself a Uni).

I really like some of those glass-smooth camera moves. What tripod head are you using? Were there some dolly shots in there too?

I do intend to go back with my sticks and a dolly with track as well as a jib. I could get some stunning stuff on a mobile track with the jib moving across the threads.

Justin... I do think there is something to the name... lol. Just with my spelling with the y,, sometimes people pronounce it as justine.. Not sure if that's more annoying or when peope sing that row row row your boat song when they find my name. Still scars from childhood, I suppose!


Can't wait to see ya footage again! I'm jealous though. need to get one myself. What has been your experience with the M2? Worth it? Wonky? Pleasing results?

Would be sweet to experiment around with it... Like to shoot at my dad's place again with one and would be sweet on a music video shoot...
