Facebook getting creepy.

Hmm, I've had the opposite experience. All my friends are pretty active on Facebook
...

LMFAO... thanks Batutta... I feel a lot better about myself now.:embarasse

"write something on your friend's wall"

Um... all in all I'm just another brick in the wall?

Yea, I had the same thing happen. I had suggested friends that were clients that I was working for and had been in contact trough email. I think FB looks at your email account and sees who your emailing and suggests friends from that.

Creepy, yea.

Yeah... I don't really get facebook.

I don't get Facebook either. The interface is not intuitive. I can't ever find my friends. Sometimes I have a wall. Sometimes I don't. Photos randomly show up in my profile. And there is an uncomfortable ability to poke your grandmother.

And, the Big Brother element is huge with Facebook. Once, I was looking to purchase a small Digital Voice Recorder. I was doing some online research. Then, I went to Facebook and in the ADs column on the right hand side, all sorts of Digital Voice Recorder sales popped up. Hey, thanks for the heads-up Facebook for telling me that the WS-321m model is on sale at Amazon but F.U. for knowing what I am shopping for. Now, I regularly clean out my cookies. It's quite invasive and creepy.

Oh, and I received a Facebook email from a "friend" twice that contained a link to a YOUTUBE video. I clicked on the link and nothing. I couldn't be bothered so I didn't investigate. A couple weeks later I received a similar Facebook email from another "friend" with the same link. This time, I clicked on it, it brought me to a page that contained a video that could not be played until I updated my FLASH version. As soon as I clicked 'YES' I knew something was afoot. It was a virus. Just to be on the safe side, I reformatted my entire computer. I'm not even afraid of viruses anymore. It's the root-kits that will kill you.

So, thank you Facebook for giving my computer's wee-wee a cold. But alas, I know you aren't going anywhere anytime soon. And to think, there was a time that it was all about Myspace. I haven't even logged into Myspace in months.

Facebook creepitude-of-the-day, for me today: got a note from someone whom I've never met or heard of, with whom I have no acquaintances (or anything else at all) in common, who's graduating school and wanted to know "Are you the XX who worked on Avatar and Lost and can you give me some career advice...?"

I'm always happy to give professional advice (hey, it's their funeral if they take it) but being tracked down like that out of the blue is a little bit disconcerting.

I hear you on this one and believe me I've been sending out to all of the "interested" people in my network. Despite their admitted interest, most of them don;t bother to respond and there's no way of tracking that kind of info so it all feels like wasted time trying make any kind of proper connection or infrm people of what's going on. When you have your friends playing Mafia Wars or join the stupid "Bet this Walnut can get more friends than Jay Leno" groups, and then those same friends don;t even look at the page of someone they actually KNOW... you gotta wonder...

Yeah Rodney, when I made a Facebook fan page for my Betrayalfest entry, I had 160+ fans. Like wildfire over the course of two days. And many people I didn't know.

But when the film was cut from the fest & available to stream online, not one bit of feedback. Strange. I would have been happy with negative comments, a flame war, just anything!

The real question is, who has more friends than Jay Leno, the walnut or the pickle?

If you go into the privacy settings you can make yourself invisible to anyone except friends. You can't be contacted or found even with a search.

Thing is, I was positive that I had already done that...

You should probably double check your settings periodically, especially when Facebook changes its layout. I went back after a layout change and found all my settings were open.

I have an account that I rarely do anything with. If I wanted to talk to people I went to high school with, I'd go to the reunions.

Face is cool

I think people who decry it are missing out

It's funa nd harmless to see what others are doing or up to

It takes minutes a day to see or wrote something

I've got 8 million friends

Most DVX Virtual Contacts but the others are real friends

It's nice too see what's up with them

Don't take it so seriously

It's just a networking site

Jeez Hudson, every time I think I'm FINALLY going to make some money with my torch and pitchfork business... YOU come along and ruin everything.

It appears the mob rule is in favor of Facebook.

Seems this thread is focused on friends (real, virtual, non-existent or otherwise).

The only thing that has me considering FB is for professional networking (like LinkedIn), which it's supposedly good for, and everybody's saying I should be doing.

Any thoughts on FB networking??? Any less creepy?

Never underestimate the power of a mob. Mobs RULE!

I don't mind FB, I look at it as a quick communication device, similar to email, yet I can talk almost realtime to people through chat. The trick I learned, don't allow access by all of those other apps, as you are actually allowing them to mine your FB data. Farmville, Answer a Question, and the rest is where you get in trouble.

Grove, I am also on Linkedin, but the communication there isn't as powerful. Linkedin is just my "advertising" page, outside my website. Everything funnels to the website. I figure, join every networking site for film-making I can, provide them as much info possible about what Indie-Arms is and does, and let it loose. It's kind of like my advertising net, trying to catch as much fish (I mean clients) as I can.

I agree. I can see someone I need to talk to and chat or just send PMs. I never do any of the other stuff. Apps etc. None of the games and really kind of picky about adding people. People just give out to much info

Yeah, I'm trying to catch fish too, I'm just not by nature one for making a big splash (ooo... sorry). Trying to turn myself from low key to... high key?

Thanks Doc
