F65 SDI out to SmallHD 702 Bright complications

I'm on SmallHD's latest 2.2 firmware, that being said I just received an Email from SmallHD's technical support. They were per usual, unfamiliar, with the Sony F65,
and weren't able to offer much support on the matter. They mentioned something in regards to Sony releasing odd output codecs via SDI and a possible firmware update to correct the issue.

Any monitor recomandations for monitors that natively support the supposed 'odd' codec that the F65 outputs via sdi, for a true 1080p at 23.98 signal?

Do you have any other monitors to test the signal on? Try setting the camera to 30p or 60i just to see if that changes the monitor output as well. The F35 has an option to always output the Monitor Out signal as 1080i, perhaps the F65 has a menu like there where you can control the monitor out resolution.

I have never used SmallHD monitors, but I can recommend the O7Q. I've used it with every frame rate available on the F65 with no problem. I've also sent signals to large flatscreen TVs without any issues as well.

I hope it works out for you. Best of luck!

The Sony F65 outputs progressive over SDI but it is sent as alternative fields, a legacy format called PsF which was devised to allow compatibility with interlaced monitors. If you have a monitor which is expecting PsF it will recognise the signal and reassemble the progressive frames, otherwise it will display the progressive as interlaced. I assume the 702 doesn't recognise 23.98 PsF so it sees the signal as interlaced at double the frame rate. It still displays the image fine but you will see some flicker on fine detail. If you record this SDI stream on something that doesn't recognise PsF it will record the stream as interlaced, but it isn't actually a problem, you just need to conform the footage as progressive in your editing app of choice.

So there is nothing wrong with the camera or the SmallHD monitor, just appears to be a small compatibility issue.

Sony do not support "1080P" in the F65 for monitoring, only PsF. It is, as mentioned, a legacy thing.

SmallHD supports PsF in specs but on my F3 I never got it working. Always showed strange 48.9i or something like that. After 12 months of "we might fix it in firmware" I sold it. I had the 502.

I can second this. We ordered a SmallHD for a long shoot with an F3, we quickly got a TVLogic instead and loved it. The SmallHD guys said the same crap and never delivered so I sold it a few days later. The TVLogic had a better picture anyway so I'd go with them, or Odys. if you want to record too.

If the picture on the monitor looks normal, forget about it. The frame rate indication is for Psf field rate, not the frame rate. Progressive frame transmitted in alternate interlaced fields. Need to match progressive frames to 1080i broadcast standards.

I can confirm that the VideoDevices Pix-e series of monitor/recorders play nicely with the F65 (they have a setting to allow you to choose between converting the psf to progressive or to keep the signal as psf). They make both a 5" and 7" version. The O7Q+ is pretty awesome too. I personally went with the 5" as the F65 is already big enough without adding more weight to it.

But you see WORLDS more with a 7" screen compared to a 5", no matter how good your vision is. I did two long projects with a 5" and will never try that again. A 5" is nice to have on hand but if you are doing narrative work, nothing compares to a 7"+.
