F55: F55, where to buy?

Hi everyone,

I am looking at buying an F55. I've been stalling on buying a new camera for about a year now and just been renting for each job or using a GH2 for smaller job (I still love that camera!). That's worked out fine but now I think I want to just use one system and stick to it. The F55 seems to offer the best all round package.

So I was comparing prices and this looks to be the cheapest place - http://www.creativeventures.be/sony-pmw-f55-pmwf55.html

Does anyone know of cheaper places to purchase from?

Also, I know I need media, screen and batteries. Is there anything else that's needed to build up a working package for the F55?

Cheers, Prendi

I love my F55 and I think you will too, great low light, the 10-bit is great quality as you would expect, and the slog2 seems to be better performing over slog but that's somewhat speculative. 4k internal, 4k live out, global shutter,... anyway I'm sure you know the specs.

You're probably going to have to stick to buying within your country to avoid paying any hefty import taxes or duties. That aside here are some considerations to "what you would need". Of course it all depends on your own individual needs and preferences:

- body
- lens mount (Optitek, MTF, etc..)
- viewfinder or LCD (For Sony OLED or LCD a recent firmware increase drive rates and reduce flicker). Other benefits of Sony peripherals are no extra cables for power, its all done through one cable which is great. Also on the subject of Sony VF's, they added recently added false color exposure tool.
- battery (any v-mount but lower battery voltages have caused some issues with cameras freezing, so get good quality batteries if you don't settle on the Sony Olivines)
- SXS media. You can get away with Sony SXS Pro cards (old blue/silver ones) but the "Pro Plus" cards will be bigger in capacity and be "guaranteed" for use. (They are also 3 times the price but 4 times the size). The "Pro Plus" will also guarantee simultaneous 4k XAVC and HD MPEG proxy writing to the same card at the same time. I've driven the regular Pro cards to 4k 60p no problem, same with SR Codec, and HFR. Other "cheap" cards that also work are the Sony XQD's which come in larger sizes like 64GB for around $400 but require an SXS adapter. So far tests have shown good performance.
- Mic mount. The is really none on the F55 (or mic) included so something to think of.
- rails, etc.. I won't list all that extra stuff I'm sure you know all about
- if you want 16-bit linear RAW then as you know AXS-R5, media, media reader,..

Anyway good luck with your purchase if you decide to go for it.

Be careful where you purchase from. There was an outfit that advertised an insanely low purchase price if you preordered but did not fulfill most of the orders that were placed.

Here is a link to a page that references some of what went down... You will have to read a bit of the thread to get the gist.

If a deal is too good to be true, it probably isn't.
