F55: F55 vs F3 most unscientific comparison ever... still...

Hey all,

as there's not so much footage out there i decided to put those clips together although i never intended to do so.
therefor it's very very unscientific and uncontrolled, but still you can see the initial/most obvious differrences
in the cameras pretty well...

(sorry for the different position i was in with the helmet, and the not so sharp F3 shot with the tissues/chair)

have a nice day

Interesting, without the rolling shutter camera waving, I can't pick one camera from the other. I thought this would be likely after hearing about the new camera's specs, but it's reassuring to see that it actually is the case.

I think ergonomics, simplicity and feature-set remain the key reasons to look at the new Sonys, rather than Image Quality improvements over externally recorded 10-bit from the F3 (which are minimal at best, excluding the depth and flexibility of 16-bit raw obviously).

Up to a certain point the benefits of the better colourspace on the 55 can't be viewed via something like Vimeo. The wider gamut should be able to record colours and tonal subtlety that the dodgy H264 encoding cannot actually represent and perhaps your viewing monitor too.

For the 55s target market (cinema) it's well placed, but for side by sides on vimeo you're going to have to take any comparison with a pinch of salt (as the OP implied)

Pop them up on a grading suite and shoot more challenging colours (grass, teal seas, etc,.) then i would be interesting in seeing how different the FF gamut can be.

cheers
Paul

Hi,

it was my intention to put them side to side without telling... ;-)

i too have a hard time judging to get one or not. (i was allowed to quickly do these shots, i couldn't even rent it)
image wise the f55 is better, hands down. noise levels, rolling shutter, colour. i (think) i wasn't on sgamut, so this should be
a different story - still on iPads, iPhones etc i think only few people could tell the difference...
if you look at the "4k" blowup of the F3 you clearly see the noise/codec. still it is the internal xdcam-codec, with no
noise reduction magic applied from davinci (or others), and samurai will be better...

thing is, if i was producing cinema stuff most of the time, then a no brainer. but as more and more people watch
their movies on iPhones, ipads, computers it's hard to justify...

the f3 boosted my work/quality of work/skills a lot. will the f55 too?

with so many great gear coming at NAB, like the Movi (check vincent laforets blog) and Ergocine's Grip, Paralinx arrow, SchneiderKreuznach's new lenses and what there is still to come i wonder if putting the money there could be better...

well well.. ;-)

I would stick to the F3 until both F5 and F55 has the promised firmware functions and until they start to prove themselves. They are both great cameras but question is if clients do care and if one can justify the upgrade. To me the F5 can be something I move towards in a years time and I see the biggest advantage not being image quality but rather a better tool to work with without the need for an external recorder or dropping resolution when overcranking.

Your quick test shows both cameras looks great and the improvements can often be subtle.

I saw the difference in the 200% footage - f55 is clearly sharper and showcased less moire in the wicker chair. And to color grade that would be great to see. But in the end, its a price thing - is it THAT much better for what you need it for if you are just using it for web work, tv work, etc. I need to get you the f35 to throw in your test!

oh please send one over the pond...;-)
the more i work the footage the more i like it... no wonder.
guess i'll sit back a week and see what NAB brings an decide then..
wish the odds in a lottery would e better...;-))

Great work throwing this together, I know what a pain in the arse it can be to spend a couple hours to work on something like this. I'm sure it's appreciated by everyone, so thank you!

Now we need one with F35 in there too :)
