F55:
http://www.bhphotovideo.com/c/product/898428-REG/Sony_PMW_F55_CineAlta_4K_Digital.html

I was looking to see if it was using standard BNC connectors, but it doesn't say. It does say there is an HDMI connector.

I note it has a separate SD Slot! Maybe adapters are no longer needed.

Two notes: One, I see there's a USB wi-fi port, which I'm guessing is for a $650 wifi adapter that's out. Since this camera has a 50Mbps codec, we may get proxy video streaming with the wifi port, as well as metadata and control in.

Also, the phrase "with option" next to the Slow & Quick Recording information. I'm not sure exactly what the option is, and I'm really hoping for a flat price here, no add on licenses.

I am so relieved about that. I can use SD wireless transmitter, older steadicam, and a LCD monitor I usually give the director on a 20' cable. Saves me from having to immediately upgrade everything to be SDI.

Ned, do you know if the 8 pin remote socket is the same as the one on the F3 (that almost no one supports) instead of a standard lanc system? (That's one of my gripes in the F3.)

If the sensor is 11.6MP it would mean that its around a 4.7K sensor outputting a 4K image (which is 8.8MP), the question would be what it would output raw. There may be a possibility that Sony is not using a normal bayer sensor.

Steve, not sure how you are getting your math but the sensor is 4096 x 2160 pixels, where do you get that it is a 4.7k sensor from?

There's a lot of extra border on this sensor that's being used for on-the-fly black balance, noise reduction, etc.

I don't remember where I read this, but it was within the first couple days of the unveiling.

Source of that info on the use of extra border was Sony itself in the days following the release. I heard it personally from Juan Martinez at our double-secret briefing and I don't remember whether I wrote that or Jon Fauer (or both of us).

Its actually and 11.6 MP sensor. 4k is ~8.8MP. Its listed as effective 8.9 MP. The 5k Epic sensor as I recall is 12.5 MP. The overage has other uses.

I was asking for an explanation because in another post Steve also said that these cameras will resolve full 4k resolution, but 8.9MP is going to be hard pressed to resolve 4000 lines. Perhaps he meant something different so I was curious to know where 4.7k came from. The F5 and F55 once Sony balances out the aliasing/resolution conundrum will probably end up being 3200 lines but in RAW mode where de-bayering will happen later you may get slightly more.

Something worth noting is that the RED EPIC and Scarlet both share the same 5120 x 2700 pixel bayer sensor which is 14MP, but the Scarlet can only shoot 24fps in at 4k while the EPIC can shoot in 5k at that frame rate and even higher. Therefore even though its the same sensor the Scarlet resolves around 3200 lines of resolution while the EPIC is approximately 4000.

So if the RED at 14MP is getting around 4000 lines of resolution (again a 5120 x 2700 pixel sensor) it becomes easier to see that the F5/F55 with a 8.9MP 4096 x 2160 is going to be hard pressed to deliver true 4k resolution and it will probably be closer along the lines of 3.2k.

I don't think we can make those assumptions. We need actual resolution tests. In general the Red cameras need the high number of photosites to debayer in the post work flow. The Epic 5k sensor debayers to a 4k image.

We all hope that the F55 ends up with similar resolution, which will end up being partly determined by the debayer system. At this point the Sony's resolution are speculation and no one knows. If debayered at 4096 it will resolve near 4000 lines keeping in mind the Nyquist limits.

More important though is the fact that stories are not told with resolution. In most instances 4k is irrelevant. Color gamut, DR and an organic feel will be more important to convey emotions.
