Hello

i am looking for a new cam finally.... going to get rid of my old C300 ! Thinking about getting USED F55, what are your thoughts on it? Would u consider it our days? Also if experienced F55 user can suggest what i should pay attention to with USED F55... plz let me know.

about their new Raw recorder , what cards would u suggest? and/or maybe there are some "self made" solutions when u can record direct to SSD discs with the use of some adopters (like C200 or Ursa has https://www.4kshooters.net/2018/08/...0-internal-raw-recording-way-more-affordable/)

have any one used the Optitron Canon EF adopter?

Regards

You can only use the R5 or R7 RAW recorders with the F55. That means you have to use Sony's AXS media which is hideously expensive. But that's the way it is. I have the R7 and love it. But it will set you back $10k for recorder and media. In all fairness, the F55 gives you 16bit files as opposed to 12bit for Canon,BM etc. Is there anything the C300 doesn't do that you need from the F55? Are you using the original C300 or C300 MkII?

c300I . cant use 8 bit anymore, no slow motion. i dont like c300 II .... DR is not that good, noise and other issues, and over all its seems like that they hold features on it just for business purpose........... could not force my self to buy it! and it did not get any popularity locally, same for both c700....

would love to try global sensor as well

I don't mean to nitpick but that statement is not true. Both recorders are compatible with the F5 and probably the FS7 too. I have both the R7 and an R5 (for sale if anyone is interested) and I use the FS7+R5 all the time. I've never tried FS7+R7 combo and I can't remember if it will work or not. Probably would, but I have not tried it myself. Same thing with the Venice, the R7 definitely works but I'm not sure about the R7.

But any, my point is that there are several cameras that work with the RAW recorders.

Hi Doug.

I just meant the R5 and R7 are the only RAW options for the F55. I don't think Atmos or Convergent Design units can record RAW from the F5 or F55. Could be wrong though.

The F55 is still a great camera. Just shot sit-downs with it all day, today. I like shooting with it WAY more than my C300. I can bounce around in and out of things like slow-mo in a matter of seconds, that would take a menu dive in my C300. As a matter of fact, I have mine set-up and mapped to a button on my 17-120. I can bounce from 'real-time' recording to slow-mo in one push of one button. Invaluable if you're in the sports world...

I have the native Sony PL/FZ adapter and two EF to FZ adapters(the Optitek that I use with my Canon CN-E primes and the Metabonez with the built-in aperture control ring for the occasions when I throw a Canon still lens on, like the 100-400). I also have the IBE adapter that lets me put my 2/3" ENG lenses on it.

I've shot a few times with the RAW recorder(the 5 and the 7) and it's nice because it perfectly integrates with the camera. Not like the janky-ass external monitor-recorders on other cameras that you have to rig-up to hang off it and string power and BNC and blah, blah, blah.

The longer I own the camera, the more I like it.

Doug, I don't think Gizmosgadget meant that the F55 was the only camera that you could use the R5 or R7 on, he meant that the R5/R7 was the only RAW recorder that you could use with the F55.

as far as i know - F55 does not output RAW over sdi or hdmi... so no .... but could do 10bit out i think... what i meant when i asked about it - if there are some self made tricks to save on media? like it was done with few other cams..... where u can use some dummy cards with cords to regular PC SSDs

If you want RAW out of the F55, you must use the R5 or R7. As far as recording the regular output of the camera to an external recorder, I don't see the point. I don't think anything you'd get from a third party external recorder would be worth the hassle or better than what you can get internally.

If you want to save on "regular media"(SxS cards), you can buy Sony XQD cards and Sony SxS adapters and save a LOT over SxS cards.

No worries Doug. My wording wasn't great. :)

As for the OP, unless you need Prores, the F55 covers all bases. I can't imagine having to deal with external recorders and the gong show of wires all over the place. You might even be happy with an F5 with the 4K upgrade. Another thing to consider, and I'm amazed how this is often overlooked on cameras these days, are the EVF options on the F5/F55. From an ergonomics point of view, they beat the lcd monitors found on so many cameras, Canon's included. Especially when shooting handheld. Even Arri uses an ENG style viewfinder.

R5 RAW recorders are going pretty cheap now days. You double the power consumption of the camera so you'll need to budget for extra batteries if you go that route.

And unless you need 4K ProRes, the F55 can handle HD ProRes(and DNx) with the addition of the ProRes/DNx board. I added it as soon as I got my 55, but I bet I've shot ProRes on that camera less than half a dozen times.

f5 nd f55 are both great camera,s.. alot of options.. decent price.. and not battery eaters.. this need for pores is yesterdays news..I mean heres a camera that can shoot The Crown.. a documentary up a mountain .. a corp event .. or news.. on 3 150WH bats a day.. second hand ones are steal..

If you look at some of the newer, even higher wattage batteries, you don't even need that many, and there's not that much of a weight bump. I have some 230 watt CoreSWX's from a special run a few years ago. Depending on what all you need to power, I can usually shoot all day on my 55 on one. If I'm doing sit-downs with with an on-board monitor(DP7Pro OLED) and changing locations, I usually don't even pull out the power supply.

I'm actually thinking about picking up a few of their new XL's(293Wh and 3.4lbs).

The F55 is great. Used it on an AMEX commercial last month and was very happy with the results.
